‘I died in a car crash and came back to life’

I remember thinking 'This is it. This is how I die. Here comes eternal nothingness...'

A user on entertainment forum Reddit has shared their terrifying experience of dying in car crash before being resuscitated.

The user recounted the moment when they experienced cardiac death, and what they saw before being resuscitated by paramedics.

“A few years ago I died in a car accident,” they wrote. “I was in a head-on collision with a drunk driver, who walked away relatively unscathed, of course. I didn’t die instantly. I sat there with many broken bones and slowly bled out.”

“I recall rescue workers frantically scrambling to get me out of my mangled car,” it read, “As I started getting tired and began slipping into unconsciousness, I remember thinking ‘This is it. This is how I die. Here comes eternal nothingness’. I felt oddly at peace. It didn’t seem like a big deal even though I knew it was.

“Everything just kind of zoomed away in a blur. I suddenly felt more aware and ‘alive’ than I ever had. It was the most pure, unadulterated awareness. It’s difficult to explain, it’s something I had never experienced or felt as a living human. The only way to put it is that my ‘mind’ or ‘being’ or ‘essence’ was free and fully aware, more aware than any of us could ever imagine.”

But before long, the user writes that they were resuscitated and “brought back to life”.

“As I was being consumed by sheer dread I suddenly found myself being ‘sucked’ back into my […] life. I snapped to in the back of an ambulance. I jolted awake into the most awful state of mind a person can experience. I was delirious and in total panic. The medic told me I was dead for about a minute and a half … I’ll be damned.”

“I slowly recovered in the hospital over the course of five months,” it read, “I was so broken and defeated and depressed.”

“It has taken everything I have and then some to go on,” ends the story.
