Dog foils prison break plot

A dog out for a morning walk unwittingly thwarted a jailbreak plot after hearing prisoners in a 30-metre underground escape tunnel.

A dog out for a morning walk unwittingly thwarted a jailbreak plot after hearing prisoners in a 30-metre underground escape tunnel.

The pooch was enjoying a stroll with its owner on the Greek Island of Corfu at the weekend when it became suspicious of some noises outside the island’s prison walls and refused to move, reports Agence France-Presse.

According to reports the dog cocked an ear to the ground and wouldn’t budge until its owner finally cottoned on to the sounds beneath its paws and called the police.

Authorities discovered a 30-metre-long tunnel, stretching from Corfu Prison’s B Wing, where 21 convicts serving long or life terms are housed.

Local news reports say battery-powered fans and plastic food containers were found in the underground passageway.

Amazingly, the same prison has seen similar jailbreak plots unfold before. In 1996 120 inmates managed to escape through an old tunnel over a two week period.
