Harris, 23, was travelling in a car driven by her fiancé, Luke Hunt, 28, in Narraweena on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, when it collided with Kenneth Lay’s car, which then slammed into a tree.

Mr Lay, a grandfather of 16 and father of seven, died in hospital.

The court heard that Hunt had been speeding in the 60km/hour zone, driving at 95km/hour and collided with Mr Lay’s car when trying to change lanes.

Hunt, a 28-year-old tradesman who the court heard now suffers from depression, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death.

Judge Charteris acknowledged Hunt’s remorse, saying “He wishes he had passed away in the accident … but his regret cannot remedy what has occurred,” Mr Charteris said.

Harris was not in court for her fiancé’s sentence.

The couple, who recently celebrated their six-year anniversary, have been together since before Harris shot to fame in 2010, when she appeared on the runway at Australian Fashion Week and on the cover of Australian Vogue magazine. She was named a young woman’s fashion ambassador for department store David Jones in 2011.

Hunt will be eligible for parole in 2016.
