Doing it for Allison

Thousands gather in Brisbane rally to protest Gerard Baden-Clay’s downgrading of murder conviction.

Thousands have gathered in Brisbane’s CBD to peacefully protest the downgrading of Gerard Baden-Clay’s murder conviction, The Courier Mail reports.

Organised as a bid to call on the Attorney General to appeal the High Court decision to downgrade Baden-Clay’s murder conviction to manslaughter, the Doingit4Allison rally at King George Square was attended by scores of Allison’s supporters, including Today Show co-host Lisa Wilkinson, Bruce and Denise Morcombe, and Allison’s brother Ashley Dickie.

Lisa Wilkinson, who was MC at the rally, called on the Queensland government to appeal the decision against Baden-Clay, and if that is not successful, to amend the legislation to make sure it can never happen again.

“Today is about justice for Allison and all women,” Ms Wilkinson said.

“This is how progress is made. If enough people are unhappy with the law as it stands, the people have the right to ask their elected officials to create new laws in accordance with the will of the people.”

The crowd gathered were all wearing yellow – Allison’s favourite colour – and those who couldn’t attend took to social media in the bright colour with the hashtag #Doingit4Allison to show their support for a woman taken far too soon.
