12 Times Celebrities Talked Openly About Masturbation

Emma Watson

It’s not often that celebs are asked about and at least not female ones, and the guys tend to just joke anyway but there are more than a few famous women who have spoken out about learning to love themselves emotionally and physically.

Here are 12 stars who haven’t shied away from.

Gina Rodriguez

The star of the popular U.S. show Jane the Virgin opened up about self-pleasure to Bust. “In all honesty, I used to feel guilty for masturbating,” she said. “Oh my god, this extreme guilt And that lasted way too long. Or maybe I masturbated too much. It’s OK to look back in retrospect and be like, it wasn’t good that I felt bad about touching myself.”

Emma Watson

Emma is a big fan of the website, which teaches women about their sexual pleasure. “A friend told me about this website called OMGYes, which is dedicated to female sexuality,” she said in a talk with Gloria Steinem in February 2016. “I wish it had been around longer. Definitely check it out. It’s an expensive subscription but it’s worth it.”

Shailene Woodley

In an interview with Net-a-Porter’s The Edit, Shailene said, “As a young woman you don’t learn how to pleasure yourself, you don’t learn what an orgasm should be, you don’t learn that you should have feelings of satisfaction. I’ve always had a dream of making a book called There’s No Right Way to Masturbate.”

Miley Cyrus

“A masturbate a day keeps the haters away,” Miley captioned one Instagram photo.

Anna Kendrick

Anna got a little frisky when she went to the cinemas to watch a Ryan Gosling movie. “Ugh – NEVER going to a Ryan Gosling movie in a theater again,” she tweeted. “Apparently masturbating in the back row is still considered ‘inappropriate’.” When Nylon asked Anna about her tweet, she said, “Thank God I’ve never been in a room with him.” But she had zero regrets, adding, “I don’t feel embarrassed.”

Caitlin Stasey

The Aussie actress launched a website called herself.com to celebrate female sexuality. On the site, Caitlin says, “A lack of monumental events shaped my sexuality, masturbating in secret, telling no one, saying nothing, concealing all sexual queries or thoughts. It’s the single reason I’m so adamant that LGBTQIA characters be involved in children’s entertainment.”

Amy Schumer

Amy has never shied away from talking about her sex life on stage. At the 2015 MTV Movie Awards, she gave a little shout out to Magic Mike XXL for helping her with her pleasure. “Magic Mike XXL. It like, really is magic,” she said. “Anytime I watch those guys, at least two of my fingers disappear.”

Miranda Kerr

When Miranda revealed in an interview with British GQ in 2014 that she was a member of the Mile High Club, she shared more info than she needed about her up in the air sexual antics. “Let’s put it this way, I’ve had an orgasm in the air before,” she said. “Alone. And together.”

Aubrey Plaza

In her movie The To-Do List, Aubrey’s character has a masturbation scene. While promoting the movie on Conan, Aubrey revealed that she wasn’t just acting when she filmed that scene…

Lena Dunham

Lena wrote in her book, Not That Kind of Girl, that she “learned to masturbate the summer after third grade.”

Eva Longoria

After apparently saying she didn’t have her first orgasm until she used a vibrator, Eva elaborated to about how women need to experiment with their own bodies. “You get better at sex when you know your own body,” she said. “How are you going to expect a man to know your body when you don’t know what pleases you? It’s really important to have a healthy sexuality and to be open about it. It’s not a taboo. It’s normal. By the way, after my vibrator quote was published, I literally got boxes and boxes of vibrators and pocket rockets (free from sex-toy companies). So I was constantly giving them away. Even before that, I would give them as gifts to girlfriends for their birthdays, and they’d be so excited.”

Taylor Momsen

Taylor fully shed her little-J-from-Gossip Girl persona when she gave a revealing interview to The Guardian in 2010 that covered everything from nudity to masturbation. “I’m a promoter of masturbation,” she said. “Don’t sleep around learn yourself first..Guys do, but girls don’t. And that’s why girls have so many bad experiences. But you can know your body, know yourself, know what feels good. You don’t have to give yourself away just to have sexual relevance. Because I don’t think sex is something people should be afraid of. It’s part of human nature, so I don’t think it should be so shameful particularly for girls and young girls.”
