When asked the secrets of her longevity she said it came down to being an independent lady. Well, that and a hearty bowl of porridge in the morning.

“My secret to a long life has been staying away from men. They’re just more trouble than they’re worth,” she told the Daily Mail.

“I also made sure that I got plenty of exercise, eat a nice warm bowl of porridge every morning and have never gotten married.”

Jessie had a simple upbringing before heading out to work at a young age. Hard work, she says, is her other long living secret.

“I always worked hard and seldom would I ever take a holiday. I left home when I was 13 and began a job milking cows.

“I always had good jobs with very nice people. It’s amazing to see how completely different the world is now from the one I grew up in,” said Jessie.

Happy Birthday, Jessie!

NBC has this totally excellent from a 100 year-old doctor: “Exercise, to me, is totally unnecessary. I think it’s mostly overrated.”

Don’t close yourself off to things: a grandson set up a Reddit ask me anything thread with his 101 year-old grandma, we love this piece of advice – “Keep an open mind, and things seem less strange.”

And who can argue with this? “Sleep well and have a Bailey’s Irish Cream before bed if you have a cold,” Helen Mulligan, 101.
