Wayne reels in the wake of a personal tragedy in this week’s harrowing episode of RFDS. But in doing so, he puts his own life at risk.

And the big question that arises from the situation is how Wayne’s (Rob Collins) partner Mira (Ash Ricardo) will react when she gets the callout to rescue the father of her unborn child.

In the aftermath of a shocking incident, both Wayne and his son Darren (Thomas Weatherall), who is also affected, deal with things in the way they know best – by going back to work. However, it’s crystal clear to their loved ones and colleagues that both are struggling – big-time.

“I think it’s really interesting to watch Darren and how he doesn’t cope, and how he puts walls up around himself and doesn’t want anyone to come in – including his dad,” Thomas, 23, tells TV WEEK.

“He just pushes [his feelings] to the side and buries himself in work. The less he thinks about it, the better.”

Darren’s girlfriend Taylor (Sofia Nolan) reaches out to help him.

“She’s trying to help Darren find the light,” Sofia says. “She has such a deep love for Darren for being there when everything went wrong [for her] and she felt so alone in the world.”

In the premiere episode of season one in 2021, Taylor lost both parents in a horrific car crash.

This week, a sombre Darren makes an error on a routine plane-repair job, and the result affects the whole RFDS team.

Elsewhere, a distressed Wayne takes out his frustrations on a RAN – a remote area nurse – who he believes was partly to blame for an incident that led to a tragedy. Wayne’s rage sparks a medical emergency of his own, which sees him collapse.

Now, there’s a race against the clock for the RFDS flight team – including his terrified partner, pilot Mira – to get to Wayne before it’s too late.
