The Voice Australia could be heading for its most explosive season yet, with insiders claiming growing tension between Kate Miller-Heidke and Richard Marx is threatening to derail the future of the series.
While playful banter and competitive sparring have always been part of the show’s winning formula, sources say Kate’s attempts to provoke Richard did not always land as intended and repeatedly left fellow coaches Ronan Keating and Mel C caught in the middle.
“Kate knows how to stir the pot and create a television moment, but Richard kept taking the bait,” an insider tells Woman’s Day. “He wasn’t always prepared to laugh it off, and viewers will see that tension play out on screen.”
‘Caught between two strong personalities’
Behind the famous red chairs, the dynamic reportedly became increasingly uncomfortable as filming progressed. While Ronan and Mel C attempted to keep proceedings light, they were often left navigating the fallout whenever another cheeky exchange became personal.
“Ronan and Mel could see what was happening, but neither wanted to become involved,” the source adds. “They were caught between two very strong personalities who weren’t prepared to back down.”
Insiders fear Richard may have fallen into the same trap that once engulfed former coach Guy Sebastian, whose increasingly tense dynamic with the panel became a major talking point before he ultimately walked away from the franchise.
And this time, the stakes could be considerably higher.
With the cost of securing international coaches continuing to place pressure on Seven’s entertainment budget, industry sources believe the network’s patience is wearing thin, saying executives are questioning whether the format still delivers enough value to justify its price tag.
“The coaches are being paid to create chemistry, not chaos,” the insider says. “Seven may decide the show simply isn’t worth the headache.”
Will The Voice return in 2027?
This comes after rumours started circulating that The Voice may not be returning for a 2027 season.
Woman’s Day reached out to Seven regarding these claims, with a spokesperson stating that nothing has been confirmed yet. “Announcements in relation to Seven’s 2027 programming schedule will be made in the back end of the year as part of the normal network Upfronts strategy,” they stated.
The rumours were especially surprising as The Voice’s 2026 premiere drew a national audience of 1.1 million, making it the biggest launch episode since 2023.
However, industry insiders are still speculating that Seven may be tempted to “rest” The Voice if tension continues.
“What audiences will see is a coaching panel beginning to fracture right in front of them,” the source says. “If the tension continues and the ratings don’t justify the spending, this could very easily become the season that brings The Voice Australia to an end… at least for a while.”
