It was a night of historic moments for Robert Irwin on the Logies stage.
After dazzling the crowd with musical numbers and slithering snakes, the youngest-ever host of the Logies also became a first-time winner!
The conservationist and I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! co-host beat out the competition to take home the Bert Newton Award for Most Popular Presenter – “I thought I only had one job tonight! I was not prepared for this,” he said, upon accepting the Logie for the 10 reality series, adding his gratitude continues onto his co-host Julia Morris.
“She took me under her wing very quickly,” Robert tells TV WEEK backstage after his win. “We have an amazing friendship and she’s always in my corner.”
While the 22-year-old was still clearly in disbelief, “It has my name on it!” he enthused with Logie in hand, Robert is very proud to be recognised for the show and the message of conservation he proudly delivers.
“My job is to come in with optimism and say, ‘Yes there are bad things happening in the world but young people can band together and make a difference. Who knew conservationists could win Logies?” he says. “My sister Bindi was the first, then my dad who was inducted into the Hall of Fame… what an honour.”
With a mission to bring his message to “places conservation isn’t often discussed”, Robert says he was thrilled to host TV’s night of nights. It holds a special place in his heart and Robert wants to ensure the TV WEEK Logie Awards continues on for the next generation to enjoy.
“As we celebrate 70 years of TV, I’m proud to say there is a new generation who will make sure it [the Logies] goes on for another 70 years; to make sure important stories are being told and we’re all having fun on Australian TV long into the future.”
As for his shiny new award, it’ll take pride of place alongside Bindi’s Logie, which she won in 2008, aged nine: “I’m just following in her footsteps,” he beams.
