The year is 1927 and the King and Queen are coming to stay. Welcome back to Downton Abbey.

After the popular series ended in 2015, fans were sent into disarray as they waited for news of a resurrection, and now, four years later – the trailer for the highly anticipated feature film has been released, and you will not be disappointed.

Created and co-produced by series creator Julian Fellowes, the trailer shows Robert Crawley, 7th Early of Grantham, receiving a letter from the royal family announcing that George V and Queen Mary are coming for a visit.

The show’s spectacular cast are returning in all of their glory, including everybody’s favourite – Dame Maggie Smith as Lady Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham, Michelle Dockery (Lady Mary Talbot) and Hugh Bonneville (Robert Crawley).

In true Downton style, the news that Royalty is paying a visit, comes with excitement, buzz and Lady Violet’s brilliant sarcasm. “Here we go…” she says sarcastically.

While the film will centre mostly around the royal visit, of course, it wouldn’t be Downton Abbey without some romance and intrigue.

Lady Mary’s marriage is still going strong to Henry Talbot (Matthew Goode) and a new romance between widow Tom Branson and Lady Bagshaw’s maid, Lucy.

But it’s also a mystery kiss between Thomas (Rob James-Collier) and an unknown gentleman that is certainly intriguing!

We also have some new faces joining the cast – including Harry Potter alum and real-life wife of Mr Carson (Jim Carter), Imelda Staunton. Ooh we cannot wait to see how she fits in.

Of course, it wouldn’t be the same if there wasn’t someone yelling “This is treason!”, which Mr Carson yells so valiantly.

Simply fabulous, darling!

Downton Abbey will be releasing in Australian cinemas September 12

The film will pick up over a year and a half after the events shown in the series finale.

Back in April, Downton Abbey released four new key art posters featuring Mary (Michelle Dockery), Edith (Laura Carmichael), Andy (Michael C. Fox), and Thomas (Rob James-Collier).

The posters show that an extravagant event is being held at Downton, with the tagline reading ‘We’ve been expecting you.’
