Idris Elba set to star, direct and produce Netflix’s The Hunchback of Notre Dame

Idris Elba – also known as the coolest man alive – is set to star in Netflix’s live-action adaptation of The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Netflix’s modern retelling of the classic tale will also be directed and produced by the Luther star, under his Green Door production company.

The series will be based on the 1831 novel of the same name by Victor Hugo, where hunchback Quasimodo falls in love with a gypsy named Esmerelda.

Of course, fans will remember Disney’s version of the tale, which featured the voices of Hollywood actors Demi Moore and Kevin Kline. As the new project is not being produced by Disney, it won’t feature their classic songs such as The Bells of Notre Dame and Out There.

However, Idris will be creating original music for the feature film, which is being pitched as a “sonic and musical experience.”

The currently-untitled project will be written by Michael Mitnick (Gifted) and is also attached to producers Fred Berger (La La Land) and Brian Kavanaugh-Jones (Midnight Special).

Idris hinted at the style of music we can expect in The Hunchback of Notre Dame in an interview with Screen Daily back in January.

“I want to do a musical next. I’d like to do a musical with modern music. No orchestra,” he says. “An ‘all-singing, all-dancing’ musical but with dance and electronic music. I’m going to try to provide some of the soundtrack for it though there’ll be enough talent on the soundtrack already. I’d also act in it. The idea is complicated.”

“I’ve given myself a development period of around a year and then I’ll be ready. I’ve got a development fund I’m working with but no other financiers yet,” he continues.

It seems Idris’ plan finally came together with the help of Netflix! Stay tuned for more updates.
