For the first time since Shane Warne’s tragic death earlier this year, his ex-wife Simone Callahan has spoken out about the heart-wrenching grief she’s still experiencing nine months on.

“It’s still fresh and it’s fluid. It never goes away,” Simone, 52, told the Herald Sun last week.

“It’s hard because it’s something I never expected would happen.”

Simone also revealed despite their tumultuous and well-publicised split, which happened amid a flurry of affair revelations in 2005, that the pair still shared a “really good relationship”, which was important for them to maintain for their children Brooke, 25, Jackson, 23, and Summer, 21.

“I never called myself a single parent or a single mum because I had Shane there,” she said.

“He was always there for the kids. [Now] it’s just me and I’m the sole caretaker so it’s a tricky one to navigate. It’s complicated but we’re getting there and doing our best.

“The kids have got to keep living and moving forward.”

The former model said she’s both “grateful” and “lucky” to have her kids by her side during the “awful” grieving process, and credits exercise, yoga in particular – which she’s recently begun teaching – for helping her clear her mind and find peace during a tough time.

“My yoga and meditation practice has been my little escape,” admitted Simone, and added that she’s been proud to see her son Jackson also adopt a healthy lifestyle in a bid to combat his trauma.

“You can use your mind to be destructive or you can use it for strength and channel your energy in the way Jackson has for himself and getting stronger,” she said.

Simone and Shane met at a celebrity event in Melbourne in 1992. Their attraction to each other was so instant and powerful that they married just three years later.

Following news the superstar bowler had died from a heart attack, aged just 52, while holidaying in Thailand in March, Simone penned a heartfelt tribute, saying he was “taken too soon” from his “greatest love”, his children.

“Eternal love remains and will never leave. Vale Shane.”
