Beloved actor Gene Wilder has passed away at age 83.

His family announced the news, with his nephew Jordan Walker-Pearlman revealing the beloved icon passed away following complications from Alzheimer’s disease.

Heartbreakingly, Jordan said Gene was diagnosed with the degenerative disease three years ago but kept it secret to avoid upsetting fans.

“He couldn’t bear the idea of one less smile in the world,” Jordan said in a statement.

Gene kept his Alzheimer’s diagnosis a secret.

The legendary actor starred in numerous Hollywood blockbusters but it was his iconic part in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory that made him a beloved icon.

Many have begun paying their respects including director Mel Brooks.

He tweeted, “One of the truly great talents of our time. He blessed every film we did with his magic & he blessed me with his friendship.”
