Australia invited to compete in Eurovision test

Dust off the spangled jumpsuits, Australia has been invited to compete in this year's Eurovision Song Contest as the wildcard entrant in a move that should be written into our history books (in glitter!).
Jessica Mauboy performed an ode to Australia at the interval of last year's Eurovision

The somewhat surprising news was announced by SBS Australia this morning, who will once again broadcast the extravaganza, this year held in Austria (home to last year’s winner Conchita Wurst) in May, hosted by Julia Zemiro. It’s estimated that the disco ball heavy contest will reach a global audience of 195 million.

Last year singer Jessica Mauboy performed at Eurovision, surrounded by, erm, robots, which led to the European Broadcasting Union inviting SBS to field a candidate for 2015.

Now here comes the fun part: who will be given the honour to represent Australia? SBS have said that they will announce the Australian tasked with bringing Australia glory.

But just to throw some fantasy contestant hats into the ring, how about Darryl Braithwaite, Johnny Farnham or Jimmy Barnes?

Because what could better unify all Australians than the chance to scream/sing some Aussie classics while wearing disco hot pants at a Eurovision party?

Plus John Farnham hasn’t had a farewell tour for awhile, so it’s about time he hit the stage again.

Yes indeed, it’s glorious news that Australia will be joining in on the Eurovision Song Contest.

Bring on May.
