The Danish royal Palace has shared an update on Prince Joachim’s condition following his emergency surgery due to a blood clot in the brain.

The 51-year-old Prince suffered the clot while holidaying with his young family in the South of France on Friday, and was subsequently rushed to hospital for the unprecedented operation.

While he remains in the intensive care unit during his recovery, a new statement from the Palace has provided us a better outlook on his condition.

The statement was shared on social media in Danish, and roughly translates to: “His Royal Highness Prince Joachim underwent surgery on Saturday night, July 25, 2020 for a blood clot in his brain at the University Hospital of Toulouse, France.

The Palace confirmed the operation had been successful, and that Prince Joachim was on track to make a full recovery.

“After the recent days of hospitalisation and treatment in the intensive care unit, it is now the doctors’ assessment that Prince Joachim will not have physical or other consequences but as a result of the blood clot.”

The Palace also gave some insight into the origins of the Prince’s condition, stating: “The blood clot in the brain was due to a sudden dissection of an artery, and the hospital’s medical team estimates that the risk of recurrence is very small once the artery has healed.

“Prince Joachim is expected to be moved from the intensive care unit soon, but will continue to be hospitalised in the near future. It is still the royal family’s hope that the media will live up to the desire for peace and respect for privacy.”

Joachim is the younger brother of Crown Prince Frederik, who is married to Aussie born Princess Mary.

Finally, the Palace added a thank you from the royal’s family, who have no doubt experienced a range of emotions in the last few days.

“Prince Joachim and Princess Marie would like to thank you for the support and the many warm greetings they have received in recent days. This means a lot. Her Majesty the Queen also warmly thanks for all the sympathy that has been shown to the royal family.”

The Prince is married to Princess Marie to whom he shares two young children with: Prince Henrik, aged 11 and Princess Athena, aged eight.

He also has two elder sons whom he shares with his former wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg.

His oldest son, Prince Nikolai, now 20, has also made a name for himself as a model, while his second eldest son Felix just celebrated his 18th birthday while the family holidayed.

Shortly before the 51-year-old royal fell ill, the family were pictured together during their holiday in France (which included Felix and Nikolai’s mother Alexandra).

The family looked to be having a lovely summery break.

Joachim is also the younger brother of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark and his wife Crown Princess Mary of Denmark.

While the families weren’t holidaying together, it’s likely they’re staying in regular contact at the moment as Joachim continues to recover from the confronting health emergency.

We’re anticipating the Palace will continue to share updates on the matter – stay tuned.
