Police have entered a home in northwest Melbourne after a five hour seige which began when police were shot at during an attempted drug raid.
Police were executing a search warrant for drugs on Levenia Street, St Albans when they had to close off the surrounding streets around 6am.
Armed with oxygen tanks and breathing masks, police began to search the property.
It is unclear whether any of the occupants are still inside.
“When police arrived at the property it is believed a handgun was fired a number of times,” a police spokeswoman said earlier this morning when the seige commenced.
“No person was injured but police have cordoned off the area and are attempting to communicate with the occupants of the residence.”
The Special Operations Group police have rammed the front gate of the house and can be seen with shields and automatic weapons drawn, reports the Herald Sun.
A nearby primary school has been closed down while the siege is in action, with the school telling parents to keep children at home until further notice.
Neighbours told the Herald Sun it is not the first time the house has been the subject of a police raid.
“Last time it was a lot more peaceful, they just came out with handcuffs on and that was it,” a neighbour said.
Some surrounding streets have now been opened, but parts of Levenia Street remain closed as police gather evidence.
