Princess Mary’s Women’s Weekly cover wins at The Maggies

An intimate portrait of Princess Mary at home in the royal palace in Copenhagen has helped The Australian Women’s Weekly take home a top magazine award.

The cover of The Weekly’s 80th birthday issue, published last October, featuring the Crown Princess as she has never been seen before was honoured with the Best Lifestyle cover at the Maggie Awards.

Praised by the judges for its “novelty, beauty and cleanliness of both design and purpose” the October 2013 Weekly cover was recognised as a standout.

The Maggies are hotly contested magazine industry awards, recognising excellence in the gentle art of magazine cover design.

Women’s Weekly editor-in-chief, Helen McCabe, said she was immensely gratified by the reward, which she said belonged to the “‘excellent team at The Weekly whose hard work made this cover possible”.

Citing the many months of negotiation that took place with the Danish Royal family to seek permission to shoot inside the Palace, Helen said The Weekly’s Deputy Editor, Juliet Rieden deserved special mention for her tireless work to not only coordinate the photo shoot, but also write the most intimate portrait of our home grown princess yet committed to print.

Fashion Editor Mattie Cronan, who styled the shoot, and photographer Michelle Holden were also singled out for their efforts to make The Weekly’s 80th birthday cover a prize-winner.
