Sophie of Wessex is widely admired for her down-to-earth attitude and approach to royal life, and while she generally likes to keep a low profile, it appears she’s all for speaking up when it comes to her rather famous mother-in-law.

In a move that came rather unexpectedly, the British royal has opened up about Queen Elizabeth, sharing a rare personal insight that’s reassured royal watchers, to say the least.

Speaking in an interview with Royal Windsor Horse Show commentator Nick Brooks-Ward, Sophie, who is married to Prince Edward, opened up about the Queen’s passion for all things horses.

“She loves all her horses and her ponies and she loves to see them being shown. And she takes such a personal interest in them,” Sophie explained of the 94-year-old.

She said anyone who comes into the Queen’s residence where the horses reside would be very easily convinced of this.

“We’re always really hoping, whenever we bump into [the Queen], it’s a question, sort of, you know, ‘How many winners?’ and she always has a huge big smile on her face when she’s had a place, which is fantastic.”

The special interview aired on Sunday afternoon in time for the Royal Windsor Horse Show, which has understandably been cancelled as an in-person event this year, and is instead being streamed online.

This marks the first time the Queen has actually missed the iconic show, which usually takes place in the grounds of Windsor Castle. It was launched back in 1943.

The Queen’s son Edward also spoke in the interview, which he and his wife filmed from their home where they are isolating.

“This has been a fantastic way of being able to do something a little bit competitive,” he said.

In fact, he reiterated that the restrictions in place this year as a result of COVID actually had a silver lining to the event, musing of the online platform: “That’s truly made it an international show, more international, which is fantastic. It’s been a great response.”

The royals have seen a number of their regular events cancelled as a result of the pandemic.

The annual Trooping the Colour parade, which takes place in June, has been rescheduled, while the usual VE Day celebrations earlier this month were also marked a little differently.

But just because they couldn’t hold any in-person events didn’t mean there weren’t other ways to celebrate.

This included a personal address from the Queen and video calls galore from the British royals, who spoke to veterans and those associated with them as they joined the UK in showing their support.

It seems when there’s a will, there’s a way – and the royals are very well accustomed to this.
