Breastfeeding mother amazed by orangutans reaction

A mother has shared an “emotional moment” with two orangutans at Melbourne Zoo.

Elizabeth and her family were visiting the Zoo to celebrate her three year old’s birthday. When her 13-week-old son Eli needed a feed she found a quiet spot near the orangutan enclosure.

As Elizabeth began to feed Eli, two orangutans approached her to watch.

Speaking to 774 ABC Melbourne , Elizabeth said: “I went around the corner to be a bit private and I was breastfeeding and this orangutan locked eyes with me and came over to check out what was going on.”

“She came over and gave me a bit of a nod,’ Elizabeth said. ‘It was absolutely amazing.

“I felt so proud and I felt she was proud of me.”

“It was just amazing.”

Elizabeth told the radio station that it was particularly special as she’d been unable to breastfeed her first child.

Other zoo goers gathered around Elizabeth and watched “in awe of what was going on.”

Elizabeth noted that as 13-week-old Eli has red hair the orangutans may have mistaken the baby for a baby orangutan.
