The 16-year marriage of reporter Tara Brown and her television executive husband John McAvoy is over – heaping further misery on the 60 Minutes star, who was jailed in Lebanon in April after a botched child recovery attempt.

Sources close to the couple say cracks started appearing in their union well before Tara was imprisoned – along with three colleagues – in Beirut on charges of kidnapping two Lebanese/Australian children.

While John was present during tense meetings between family and Nine staff as negotiations dragged on to release Tara and her crew, tellingly, there was no sign of him at Sydney Airport when she finally returned home from her two-week ordeal.

In happier times: Tara and John have been together for 16 years.
