For those who like to up the kink levels between the sheets, it’s essential to have a safe word – a word you and your partner have agreed on that signals when you want to stop or ease whatever sexual act or sex position you are doing.

Safe words should be an uncommon word, something unlike what you may say in the bedroom, like “stop” or “ouch” as to avoid confusion with role play. For instance, in Fifty Shades Of Grey Anastasia Steele and Christian Grey’s safe word was yellow.

For this reason, the safe words people have adopted when engaging in rough sex, BDSM or kink can be quite peculiar.

“Yellow” was the safe word adopted by 50 Shades Of Grey lovers, Christian and Anastasia.

According to a survey by adult sex toy brand Lovehoney, some of the most unusual safe words people use include: “platypus”, “sea cucumber”, “Kelly Clarkson” (thanks to the film The 40-Year-Old Virgin), “Hufflepuff” and “care package”. However, colours, fruits and a certain mythical creature made up the most commonly used words.

After asking 1,300 adults for their go-to safe word, the survey found the most commonly used word to be “red”, followed by “pineapple”, “banana”, “orange”, and “peach”. The words “apple”, “vanilla”, “yellow”, “blue” and “unicorn” also made the top ten.

And, in our opinion, ranking as the least sexy safe word people admitted to using (which is probably a good idea since the aim of the safe word is to halt the action) was “Donald Trump”. Just two people admitted to using the current President of the United States name.
