When you think of Karl Stefanovic the word ‘quiet’ mightn’t be the first word to spring into your head, but that’s exactly how Sylvia Jeffreys has described her longtime colleague and brother-in-law.

Speaking with BW Magazine, the newsreader explained that what we see on television isn’t quite reality.

“He’s a very quiet mentor at the network, which I think a lot of people don’t realise,” she told the publication.

“You see the larrikin and the boyish charm every single morning on air,” she continued, adding: “but what I see every day is an incredibly generous, kind and compassionate man, very aware of his ability to help people navigate things he’s already navigated.”

However, she did concede that there are still moments of unpredictability with the Gold Logie-winner.

Sylvia also touched on rumours that she’ll soon be sitting alongside Karl as co-host of the Today show.

“Whatever happens, I’ve got a job that I love on a show, so it’s all good,” she told the outlet, without giving too much away.

Sylvia was shocked when long-time Today show co-host Lisa Wilkinson announced her sudden departure from the breakfast program last month, ending a 10-year run.

“I heard about it the same time that everyone else did,” she told Confidential at the Cosmopolitan Women of the Year awards.

“It was as big of a shock to me as it was to everyone else. I felt surprised.”

Sylvia, who is good friends with Lisa, added that she’s still very much supportive of her future.

“I am thrilled for her because she is thrilled, so it is all good,” she said.

The morning after Lisa shared her news, Sylvia took a moment on Today to congratulate her friend.

“I did speak privately with Lisa last night and I thanked her and I congratulated her because ultimate this is an exciting time for Lisa,” Sylvia explained.

“It is a start of a brilliant and exciting new chapter and I will be cheering her on as I always do as she takes on this next challenge.”

Lisa will be joining news and current-affairs program The Project as co-host alongside Carrie Bickmore, Waleed Aly and Peter Helliar in 2018. She will also be hosting The Sunday Project.
