Grab the tissues, tonight is Sonya’s final episode of Neighbours and it is going to be gut-wrenching.

It’s a difficult goodbye but none more so than for Eve Morey, who revealed she wasn’t ready to farewell her beloved character.

“It was a shock,” Eve, 35, tells TV WEEK. “[But] it’s kind of a reality of the business.”

Eve Morey and Ryan Moloney have been on-screen together for almost a decade.

On screen, the beloved mother and wife heads on a road trip with husband Toadie (Ryan Moloney), having just discovered she only has a matter of days left to live.

Since her diagnosis in January to her final moments spent in Toadie’s arms, Sonya’s battle with stage four Ovarian Cancer has been heartbreaking to watch.

Sonya’s death scene was heartbreaking to film.

The decision to write Sonya out of the iconic show came almost a decade after her first episode in 2009.

“I think by the end of 2017 it was a bit contentious as to what the future of Neighbours was,” Eve reveals. “There was going to need to be changes.”

“The writing out of Sonya was one of those things to keep moving the show forward.”

While the decision to leave may not have been her own, Eve has relished the opportunity to spend more time with her two children.

“I’d just come back from maternity leave and I was like ‘I want to be with my kids’,” Eve recalls of learning the news. “But I never would have given myself permission [to leave].”

She adds: “Even though it wasn’t something that was necessarily my choice, it worked out exactly the way it should.”

Neighbours airs weeknights, 6:30pm, on 10 Peach.
