Delta Goodrem is one of the most famous women in Australia, having spent the past 26 years in the public eye, and sharing many of her milestones with millions of devoted fans since she was just 15 years old. But it has come with a dark downside.
“Delta has the biggest heart in the world, and she adores her fans, but she has also learned just how dangerous life in the spotlight can be – because she’s had to!”, one close friend tells Woman’s Day.
“She’s been the subject of threats and hate campaigns over the years. There’s been stalkers, and frightening fan mail. It would be scary for anyone. But she also learned to take precautions and protect herself.
“She also has a new bodyguard, who would die before he let anything happen to Delta. She’s never felt more protected, secure and safe than since she met and fell in love with Matt.”
Friends say since Delta, 41, married musician Matthew Copley last year, he’s moved to protect her on every level, and that she “feels totally secure” with him by her side, as they build a future together.
Matthew, no doubt, shielded her from the worst of an alleged online harassment campaign that erupted after Delta wowed the world with her performance in the Eurovision Song Contest in Austria.
Just this week, according to The Daily Telegraph, 33-year-old Daniel Elias Tadros faced Bankstown Local Court and was charged with using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend, after an alleged online harassment campaign.
NSW Police also applied for an AVO on the singer’s behalf against Tadros.
Police were also forced to intervene to protect Delta six years ago when an obsessed fan went to the singer’s home five times on Valentine’s Day with it later emerging in court that he had also sent her 300 love poems.
And in 2009 Delta and her then-fiancé, former Westlife singer Brian McFadden, called in security experts after an obsessed cyber stalker professed his love for Delta and threatened to harm Brian on Twitter.
“Delta has always been incredibly generous with her fans, and she really does love them, but occasionally that devotion can become creepy if not dangerous,” explains her longtime friend.
“She spends a lot of money on security and splits her time between Sydney and Los Angeles, because it’s easier for her to live a more normal life in LA. And these days she has Matt to support her and protect her. He’s never going to let anything bad happen to her!”
