History was made on Monday as Aussie soap Neighbours showed the very first same- sex wedding on our screens since the legalisation of gay marriage in Australia.

As far as soapie weddings went, there were no deaths, no major arguments and no car accidents – giving way to the purpose of the episode, the wedding itself.

Takaya Honda and Matt Wilson made history as the first TV characters to wed in a same-sex marriage on Aussie TV.

“The moment, this wedding, which is the first same-sex marriage being legalised, that was enough for it to be interesting for an audience,” Takaya Honda (Groom David Tanaka) said in an exclusive chat with Now to Love before the show aired.

“The fact that it didn’t need to have conflict or drama and is just a big fun wedding is what everyone wants it to be and we wanted that to come into fruition as well.”

While the Neighbours cast and crew aimed for a special TV moment, it was so much more than anticipated.

The emotional union had hundreds of fans on Twitter going bananas, including the holding number one trending spot.
