Meryl Streep was too “ugly” to be cast in King Kong

Perhaps the secret to Meryl Streep's success isn't acting talent but ridiculously thick skin.

It’s true what they say, you really do need to develop a thick skin to survive the cold-hearted industry that is Hollywood.

During an interview on The Graham Norton Show, where she appeared to chat about her undoubtedly successful career, the 65-year old revealed one of her all-time worst auditioning experiences.

It was for the leading female role, Dwan, in the 1976 film King Kong with producer Dino De-Laurentiis.

She was blatantly told that her looks just don’t make the cut, and he wasn’t very nice about it.

“Why do you bring me this ugly thing?” De-Laurentiss turns to his son and asks him in Italian, who had discovered the then-unknown actress in a play and brought her in to meet his dad for the role.

Not so ‘ugly’ Jessica Lange, who is the same age as Streep went on to star as Dwan in the end.

Despite the (now minor) slap in the face, Meryl Streep remains one of Hollywood’s highest paid actresses, with nearly twenty nominations during her tenure and three Academy Awards under belt – proving that looks just aren’t everything.
