Amazing pictures: Kate and Leo reunite at the SAGs

It’s the best love affair that never was; Kate and Leo together forever.

It’s the best love affair that never was; Kate and Leo together forever.

It’s almost been 20 years since we saw Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio fall in love on the big screen in Titanic and while that romance ended tragically their real life friendship has proved unsinkable.

At Saturday’s SAG awards Kate,40, and Leo, 41, reunited once again on the red carpet to hug, kiss hello and wish each other well for their respective nominations; Kate for her role in Steve Jobs and Leo for The Revenant.

In the past the platonic pair have been open about how deeply they care for each other, perhaps most notably while promoting their 2008 onscreen reunion for Revolutionary Road.

During an appearance for the film on the Today Show Kate joked about how much they’ve changed since Titanic: “Well, I think I can speak for both of us: we have a lot more wrinkles. Don’t we, darling? I’m proud of him, though. I can’t say that you’re taller, because you were always tall. He’s a man now; look at him — he’s just bigger. Physically you aren’t that different; you’re just less puny.”

And Leo was quick to offer Kate some heartfelt praise: “She’s still as beautiful and radiant as the day I met her. She is the consummate professional; she keeps pushing herself to an emotional truth when she’s working. That’s why I keep saying she’s the best.”

But Kate had us feeling all of those warm, fuzzy feels in a big way when she won a 2009 Golden Globe for her role in Revolutionary Road, which was directed by her then husband Sam Mendes, and included an earnest message to her onscreen-love during her acceptance speech.

“Leo, I’m so happy I can stand here and tell you how much I love you and how much I’ve loved you for 13 years,” Kate said. “I love you with all my heart, I really do.”

But those wishing that the pair would just get married already need to know that Kate and Leo have already walked down the aisle together… sort of.

At Kate’s very small 2012 wedding to her third husband, Ned RocknRoll , Leo reportedly gave her away.

But at the end of the day Leo sums up his love for Kate best when he said in 2013: “We [he and Kate] were both just kids of 21 when we made Titanic all those years ago. We have never not been friends since that time. I speak to her all the time. But friends – not lovers.”

We can only hope their hearts will go on.

Leo says “a sense of humor” has kept them close for 20 years. “We laugh at the same things,” Leo told the UK’s Express in 2013. “She never lets me take myself seriously, even if I wanted to. We have a special magic.”

Even then the pair were close. Leo once told Oprah Winfrey: “In a lot of ways, Kate and I have really grown up in this industry together; we’ve been a support mechanism for each other for such a long period of time. We’ve been there for each other and helped guide each other.”
