The 39-year-old mother-of-six and Oscar winner, who is the first woman from the United States to receive the title, was recognised for her services to UK foreign policy and the campaign to end sexual violence in war zones.

Jolie was presented with the Insignia of an Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael and St George at a private audience with Her Majesty at Buckingham Palace.

The Hollywood star was appointed a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Human Rights Council in 2001, before being appointed as Special Envoy of UN High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres in 2012.
