Game on: Palmer United Party’s Jacqui Lambie refuses to back down as new Senators take their seats

Palmer United Party Senator Jacqui Lambie on Channel Nine's today program.

One of the new brigade of crossbenchers set to play a crucial role in deciding the fate of the Coalition’s legislative agenda from next week, the Senator took the Prime Minister to task on breakfast television for exploiting his daughters during the election campaign to help win office.

Speaking this morning on Channel Nine’s Today program, Ms Lambie accused the PM of compromising his daughters’ safety and advised that someone in his position should be prepared for criticism.

“I understand there is times when our families will be caught in pictures and on TV monitors, but there’s a fine line between that and parading them for your own self purposes and … to forge your own career,” she told Today host Lisa Wilkinson.

“You’ve got one of two choices. You can run and hide or you can say to yourself, ‘Here’s a bucket of cement, toughen up’.”

The Tasmanian added she harboured ambitions to snare the nation’s top job, pointing to idol Margaret Thatcher as a leader who “stood her ground”.

“You don’t go into politics if you don’t want to go all the way. If you don’t have those aspirations, maybe you shouldn’t be here in the first place,” she said.

Ms Lambie has previously called Mr Abbott a “bare-faced liar” and “political psychopath.” She refused to back away from these comments today, saying “You’ve got to ask what sort of person we’re dealing with. Where’s his humanity?”

Ms Lambie insists the Palmer United Party will not be a rubber stamp for government policies such as the GP co-payment.

Her Senate term commenced on 1 July and she will take her seat, alongside fellow Palmer United Party Senators Dio Wang and Glenn Lazarus, on 7 July.

Tampon commercials receive most complaints

The ads from Carefree's 'Be real' campaign were named by the Advertising Standards Bureau as the most complained about ads this year.

Together, they attracted 300 complaints for so-called “graphic” content.

Complainants protested the depiction of a young woman saying “shoving that, up there” while holding a tampon; another typing into a search engine the question “Am I putting my tampon in the wrong hole?” and the image of a young gymnast with a pad “bulging out” of her leotard.

The ABS dismissed all complaints regarding both ads, but the company has released a statement saying the negative attention illustrates “a real and pressing need to break down lingering social taboos.”

“We acknowledge the subject matter may be confronting but periods are a normal part of a woman’s life,” Mitzi Saitzyk, a spokesperson for Johnson & Johnson said in the statement.

“The very fact that these commercials have drawn so much attention supports our belief that there are still some very disappointing stigmas associated with menstruation and young women continue to be made to feel ashamed of the very natural functions of their bodies.”

“We appreciate that some people feel uncomfortable when they see sanitary products on screen but women are familiar with these objects – they see them every month. The feedback we have received tells us that Australian women want the truth, not advertising puffery, when it comes to managing something as real as their periods.”

A Carefree commercial attracted similar attention in 2012 when an ad for Acti-Fresh Liners was named most complained about ad of the year after it used the words “vagina” and “discharge” on national television.

“We don’t shy away from the using real words and real scenarios, which reflect the concerns of real women,” Ms Saitzyk said.

Does Rob Kardashian have a secret son?

Rob Kardashian has surprised his twitter followers by tweeting about his secret son.

“Happy I got my Son with me for the 4th tomorrow!! Can’t wait to watch fireworks with my little man! Hope everyone is safe!” he wrote in the tweet that has shocked his fans.

But it turns out the reality TV star was just joking and even fooled his mum Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner, who emailed her son to check up on his tweet.

Rob quickly took to Twitter again saying: ‘Those who know me know I play and I do NOT have a Son. Y’all got my mama emailing me asking if I have a Son lol goodness hahaha. GOODnight (sic)’

Despite the joke, this isn’t the first time Rob has talked about his ‘secret son’. Rumours of Rob having a child surfaced in December.

An insider revealed to Star magazine that Rob spilled the news at a recent get-together at his apartment when friends noticed a teddy bear on his bed.

“He said that it was a present for his son,” says the source.

“The possibility that Rob may have a child has been the buzz in the Kardashian circle for a while, but no one knows for sure. And no one will talk about it.”

This isn’t the first time Rob has tweeted about his son.

In May he wrote: “Shout to to God … Shout out Mom, shout out to my son’s mom cuz she been holding me down since high school n shout out to my son Robert the Third. lol”

The tweet was promptly deleted.

Insiders say that Rob’s love child was the result of a fling with a woman he met in Miami four years ago.

“There’s a good chance that the child’s mother wants nothing to do with the fame, and that’s why she’s staying so hush,” a source said at the time.

Beef fat used in Jenny Craig meal

The Weekly puts a Jenny Craig meal under the microscope and finds rendered beef fat is the second biggest component in the dish.

In the July issue of *The Australian **Women’s Weekly,* we decided to put Australia’s biggest weight-loss companies under the microscope to find out how their food product fares nutritionally and just what is in the frozen meals.

The Weekly cooked, plated, photographed and dissected pre-packaged foods into their constituent components and weighed by our staff at The Weekly’s Test Kitchen.

All this information was then sent to academic Fiona Willer at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane. And the results weren’t good, particularly for Jenny Craig.

“Nutritionally, this is Jenny Craig scraping the bottom of the barrel,” says Fiona.

“By far, the biggest ingredient in this meal is potato wedges at 38 per cent – hardly the centrepiece of a balanced main meal – but within the wedges, the second biggest component after potato is beef tallow, a rendered beef fat and a source of saturated fat. The only reason that would be there is for taste and texture. Fat is flavour and Jenny Craig knows that.”

Incidentally, tallow – essentially lard – was the fat used by McDonald’s in its French fries until 1990, when it switched to vegetable oil.

Thomas Kelly’s younger brother pleads “respect one another”

Thomas Kelly, Stuart Kelly and Kieran Loveridge

“An absolute joke” is how Kathy Kelly described Kieran Loveridge’s four-year jail sentence for the manslaughter of her son. Today the NSW Court of Criminal Appeal agreed it was “manifestly inadequate.”

Loveridge, the Sydney youth who killed teenager Thomas Kelly with one punch in Kings Cross, will now serve a minimum jail sentence of seven years and two months for Thomas’ manslaughter and a total sentence of 10 years for the alcohol-driven spree of random assaults he inflicted on people.

Chief Justice Tom Bathurst said, “This was a case in which the respondent’s offences were sudden, violent and unprovoked. His victims were chosen at random as they moved peacefully about their business in a public place.

“The alcohol-fuelled nature of the respondent’s actions was also significant, given the contemporary prevalence of this type of offending and the considerable community disquiet around it.”

It is “bitter sweet” for the Kelly family, who will mark the anniversary of Thomas’ death in just a few days’ time.

“It’s difficult – there is no celebration today,” Ralph Kelly, Thomas’ father, told reporters outside the court.

“You can’t balance a life with years in jail. It’s very bitter sweet as we’re three days away from the anniversary of Thomas’ death.”

Stuart, the younger Kelly brother, spoke publically for the first time. The third young male at the centre of this tragedy, the 16-year-old used his time in front of the media to become “a messenger of change.”

“I lost my brother to alcohol-fuelled violence,” Stuart said.

“I can tell you first-hand to experience this kind of pain at such a young age is too hard.

“It is my generation and yours, it’s ours to begin this conversation at home across the dinner table, in our schools, our universities and among peer groups. You too can be a messenger of change.

“I will miss Thomas deeply for the rest of my life but somehow I know he will always be there by my side just as he was during the 14 years we had together.

He pleaded for the community to show each other respect.

“I want Thomas’s short life to have some meaning in his death, so that we can see change – a new fresh start.

“I believe we should have respect for one another, for our friends, family, acquaintances, different cultures and complete strangers.

“A culture where we accept responsibility for our actions – not one where we all too often lay the blame on our past as an excuse for what we do today.”

Grant Kenny and Lisa Curry: We’re back together!

For Lisa Curry and Grant Kenny it appears love really can conquer all. The pair have started spending more and more time together despite a love child and a toy boy standing in their way.

Friends of the former golden couple, who split in 2009, have told Woman’s Day the pair are putting their differences and bitterness behind them and rediscovering the sparks that brought them together.

The couple, who share three children together, Jaimi, Morgan and Jett, have been spending more time together lately at the family home where Grant lives with two of their children.

“That home in Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast is still Grant and Lisa’s private sanctuary,” says one family friend. “They designed it together and there are still photos of them on the walls.

“You can’t wipe out 20-plus years of marriage with a divorce.Everyone forgets they’re only separated. Even after five years apart, neither one seems keen to finalise it with a divorce.”

The pair’s latest development is one no one saw coming and is sure to break radio host Fifi Box’s heart. Fifi, who welcomed a daughter with Grant in April 2013, was hoping to rekindle the love affair with Grant.

Lisa is also still in a relationship with her boyfriend Joel Walkenhorst, who is 20 years her junior, and recently travelled with her on a motorhome holiday around Australia.

Despite this, Lisa is increasingly turning to her ex-husband for support.

“There have been family sleepovers and Lisa has cooked breakfast for Grant in the morning before she goes back home to Joel,” confirms the family friend.

Lisa and Grant’s daughter Morgan, 23, who now lives in Paris, has also helped bring her parents closer through regular Skype calls which they do together form the family home.

“Seeing them pottering around the house together again, cracking mum and dad jokes and imparting parental wisdom makes the kids happy, even though they are laughingly told not to get their hopes up,” confirms one friend.

“Lisa doesn’t even knock when she enters the house, that’s how confident she is of her welcome. She’ll march into the kids’ rooms and tell them to tidy up – and Grant loves it, because discipline isn’t his strong suit.

“Jaimi in particular is a bit of a homebody and wants her parents back together more than anything, even though she’s the one who has been most welcoming of Fifi as mother of her new sister Trixie.”

Meanwhile, it appears Fifi and Grant have chosen not to continue their liaison, helping things between Lisa and Grant further.

“Lisa is over the moon she didn’t lose him to Fifi,” her friend says.

“It’s helped her feel more relaxed around her ex. Lisa’s proud they’ve remained close since the split.”

Kim Watkins reveals her ‘unnerving’ experience with Rolf Harris

Melbourne TV personality Kim Watkins has relived the ‘unnerving’ moment when she too fell victim to convicted child sex offender, Rolf Harris.

The 46-year-old host of 9am With David and Kim has opened up about the terrifying moment when Harris inappropriately ran his hands over her buttocks and torso, then shuddered and groaned in her ear after the show.

Kim, who admits she’s been following the veteran entertainer’s trial closely, says the entire court process has brought back “unpleasant memories” of her experience with the now 84-year-old performer.

“Like so many others, I’d grown up watching Rolf Harris on television. He was my childhood idol,” Kim said.

Of the interview she conducted with the then 79-year-old, Kim said Harris was “his chirpy self.”

But it’s what happened behind the scenes that left the mother-of-three unneasy.

“As we were lined up for a picture, me on one side of Rolf, David on the other, he slid his hand on my backside, then straight up my back, under my armpit, and uncomfortably near my breast,” Kim revealed.

“Then Rolf leaned into me, buried his face into my neck and groaned and sort of shuddered at the same time, making a strange noise, like, ‘Ahahahaha!’ I pulled away, repulsed.

“I was so disappointed to realise what a dirty old creep he was. What he did was so weird, disturbing and sleazy, I was stunned.”
