Mother charged after miracle baby survives six days in drain

A newborn baby has survived six days in a storm water drain after being discovered on Sunday in Sydney’s North West.

The mother accused of abandoning her new born baby boy in the drain, has now been charged with attempted murder and refused bail.

Following extensive inquiries, including hospital record checks and doorknocks, police arrested and charged a 30-year-old woman from Quakers Hill on Sunday. The newborn was discovered by cyclists who were using the cycle path along the M7 motorway.

Rydalmere resident, David Otte and his daughter Hayley heard the baby crying during their ride at about 7:30am.

“It was so intense. You couldn’t tell it was a baby,” Mr Otte said. “We couldn’t see it but we could hear it. It was distressed.”

With the help of police and passers-by, they were able to lift the 200kg concrete top of the drain and found the baby 2.4 metres below.

“We were going to get that lid off no matter what it took,” Mr Otte said. “Physically, no one could have fit themselves down into that drain. A child maybe but not an adult, no way in the world.”

The child was found to be suffering from malnutrition, dehydration and internal injuries.

The newborn’s dehydration level suggested he had been there since Tuesday with Police alleging he was placed there just 24 hours after he was born.

The boy was still wrapped in a hospital blanket when he was found. Police say the newborn would have been in great danger yesterday had he not been discovered, with temperatures in Sydney’s North West reaching 45 degrees.

The child is now in a stable condition at Westmead Children’s hospital and is being cared for by the NSW Family and Community Services Minister.

The brave former Home and Away star took to Instagram to share a smiling, make-up free selfie with her mum whilst in the midst of her treatment for Hodgkin lymphoma. She has previously shared photos of herself hitting the beach and paddle boarding as she refuses to let her diagnosis stop her from living life to its fullest.

Tessa announced in September that she had been diagnosed with the disease, which is the same type of cancer that Delta Goodrem was diagnosed with in 2003.

Tessa and her NRL player husband Nate Myles released a statement at the time, thanking fans for their support as Tess prepared to undergo treatment.

“Tessa will be undergoing chemotherapy over the next few months. Tessa and Nate would like to thank all for their well wishes and would ask for privacy during this very difficult time,” the couple said in a statement to the Daily Telegraph.

Tessa and Nate, returned home to the Gold Coast from LA where they had been living as Tess pursued an international acting career, so that Tess could undergo treatment closer to home.

Chemotherapy can be an incredibly gruelling which can result in extreme nausea, fatigue and hair loss, amongst other symptoms, but Tessa seems to be keeping her chin up and doing well.

Delta Goodrem was just 18 when she was diagnosed with the disease in 2003. Now 29, Delta has since made a full recovery.

Tessa James, 23, was smiling and happy in spite of undergoing treatment for Hodgkin Lymphoma as she shared this selfie with her mum in the background.

Prince George and North West have been voted the most stylish babies of 2014.

His royal cuteness and Kimye’s daughter have topped the poll for boys and girls, respectively, in a survey by UK fashion label, My1stYears.com.

The third-in-line to the throne has been a style icon since birth with the tot’s cute ensembles selling out within minutes of his public appearances.

The sailboat smock overalls worn by the youngster for his playdate in New Zealand earlier this year from London-based retailer Rachel Riley sold out of all sizes within just a few hours of George being photographed in them.

Meanwhile Kim Kardashian and Kanye West’s daughter, North West topped the poll for this year’s most stylish little girl – which is no surprise considering that the one-year-old has already appeared in US Vogue and sat from row at Paris Fashion Week events with her famous parents.

Stylish baby North has also already made her very own solo high fashion debut earlier this year when she featured in former-Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld’s magazine, CR Fashion Book – wearing Chanel no less.

Other celebrity offspring who also made the cut were Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick’s son, Mason, and Beyonce and Jay Z’s daughter, Blue Ivy.

Secret celebrity twins

Celebrities and the twin siblings that you never knew they had!

Celebrities and the twin siblings that you never knew they had!

It’s not uncommon for celebrities to have lesser known siblings that stay out of the spotlight and lead more private lives than their famous brothers or sisters.

It’s rather unusual though to find out that quite a few celebrities have a secret twin hidden away who chose to follow a quieter path than their famous sibling.

Check out all the celebrities that have a twin sibling that you never knew about!

Scarlett Johansson hit the red carpet with her twin brother Hunter this week for the first time since becoming a mother. The pair are both celebrating their milestone 30th birthday this year.

Ashton Kutcher and his twin Michael who had a heart transplant when the pair were just young children and also has cerebral palsy. Ashton has previously said that he contemplated suicide at the age of just 13 so he could save his brother’s life with the heart transplant.

Gisele Bundchen has a twin Patricia, who is rather surprisingly not a supermodel like her sis although she is stunning – instead she manages her sister’s career. Clearly it’s paying off as Gisele routinely tops the annual Forbes rich list as the world’s highest paid model.

Giovanni Ribisi has a twin Marissa who is also an actress.

Jon Heder, who is best known for his starring role in Napoleon Dynamite, has a twin brother Dan who also works in the movie business – behind the scenes in visual effects.

Famed British model Karen Elson has a secret win too – Kate Elson.

Star of 24, Kiefer Sutherland is another star with a twin who works behind-the-scenes in Hollywood. His sister Rachel works on movies in post-production.

Leslie Hamilton is the identical twin of Terminator star Linda Hamilton and also played her double in the movie.

The similarity is uncanny between Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon and his twin brother Kelly, who also served as a stand-in for Nicholas on the show.

British popstar Olly Murs has a twin brother Ben, who was reportedly furious when his brother missed his wedding while competing on the UK’s X-Factor – the show that shot him to stardom. The pair reportedly now remain estranged.

New treatment for postnatal depression a success

mother and baby post natal depression

Each year in Australia, about 40,000 women experience postnatal depression by the time their baby is three months old, yet more than 50 per cent of mothers with postnatal depression don’t seek help because they worry that they will be seen as a failure, don’t know the signs of depression or are concerned about passing medications to the baby through breast milk.

A new world-first trial is changing the way women can get help for postnatal depression and the results are impressive. More than 70 per cent of depressed women had a dramatic improvement.

The $125,000 trial, by the Parent-Infant Research Institute and funded by beyondblue, included women from all around Australia who experienced moderate to severe postnatal depression and agreed to take part.

The MumMoodBooster program is the first fully developed and evaluated online treatment for women, with online sessions, videos, and discussion forums for both mums involved in the program and their partners.

Lead researcher Professor Jeannette Milgrom, from the Parent-Infant Research Institute (PIRI), said women engaged well with the program with two thirds posting on the online community forum during the trial.

“Our results show that our fully-developed online program, MumMoodBooster, is an effective treatment option for women with clinically diagnosed PND. This program is potentially accessible to large numbers of women in metropolitan, rural and remote areas,” she said.

“MumMoodBooster may change the way women with PND are treated after they are diagnosed. Women can receive treatment in the comfort of their own home which in turn will help to relieve the burden on existing health services.”

Of the women who participated in existing standard routine care for PND, only 15.8 per cent had recovered from their depression at the end of the 12-week trial. In contrast, of the women who had used the MumMoodBooster online intervention and telephone support, more than four times as many women (71.4 per cent) were no longer diagnosed as depressed at the end of the trial.

beyondblue CEO Georgie Harman said if implemented nationally, this program could benefit thousands of Australian women who might be experiencing postnatal depression and are not aware of the help available, are too embarrassed or too ashamed to reach out for help from a health professional.

“We know many mums with PND are afraid people will think they are not good mothers, and we hope they will use this online program at home to help them with their mental health and their parenting,” she said.

“This study shows that an online program with interactive options, supported by some telephone coaching, is a very effective way of treating PND.”

Post and Antenatal Depression Association Acting (PANDA) CEO Jenni Richardson said a specialist perinatal helpline or online program accessed in the home can be life changing for women.

“We hear from distressed mums who will not seek help because of the fear of being labelled a ‘bad mother’ or who struggle to leave their home due to depression or anxiety on top of the demands of a new baby. PIRI and beyondblue are to be congratulated on the MumMoodBooster program,” she said.

The Parent-Infant Research Institute partnered with Dr Brian Danaher and Dr John Steeley from the Oregon Research Institute in the US, who are behaviour change experts and spent three years (prior to the beyondblue-funded trial) developing an internet treatment intervention for women diagnosed with PND, which was funded by the National Institute of Health. The trial also received initial funding from the Windermere Foundation.

Heston Blumenthal’s tips for a fuss-free Christmas feast

Heston Blumenthal gives us his fantasy Christmas.

Heston Blumenthal is the glasses wearing, shaved head, English uber-chef whose multi-sensory food philosophy means that the key ingredient to any great gastronomic feast is not to discount the power of sight, smell and sound.

On a short break away from his beloved Fat Duck restaurant, Heston’s Michelin star eatery in the English village of Bray, Berkshire, The Weekly caught up with the superstar chef about all things food and got his secret recipe for a fantasy Christmas.

Q: You’ve been on a food safari all over the world – where is your favourite restaurant?

A: I don’t have one. There are restaurants where you just say, ‘I fancy a so and so’ but it could just be somewhere with a view. It depends what mood you’re in.

Q: You’re a self-taught chef, so why the scientific and super sensory method to cooking?

A: In a nutshell, we taste with all our senses. You can make two glasses of wine seem totally different by the moods that you drink them. The ears, the eyes the nose the mouth, they all send signals to make a decision on whether you like or dislike something.

At the moment my team and I are doing a thing with a science museum basically and we’re looking at how it was previously thought that when you ate food and you swallowed it, if you got pleasure from the food all of that decision making was in your brain. But now they think maybe the digestive system has more to do with deciding about pleasure- they reckon it has a brain.

Q. Do you think you missed out on anything by not doing all of the fancy cooking classes?

A. Look, it doesn’t make me better but what it’s done is it’s constricted me less.

So if you’ve had something very rigid and classic installed into you then you think, ‘Well that’s it, it has to be like this’. It’s like Italian restaurants. You go to an Italian restaurant and you ask them for a cappuccino (raises his hand) and they’ll kick you out.

And how often do you eat spaghetti bolognaise? Because Italians would never eat it – no way. It doesn’t exist in Italy. Because they would never eat spaghetti with bolognaise. Why? Because bolognaise comes from Bologna and tagliatelle comes from Bologna. They [Italians] are staunchly regional and historical.

Q. You seem so passionate about cooking, almost obsessive, does that ever test your temper in the kitchen – are you one of those yelly chefs?

A. No. Absolutely not. I used to be a yeller but I haven’t raised my voice in about ten years. I don’t need to.

Q. When you come here to Australia is there anything you look forward to eating?

A. Oh loads of things! It could be one of David Blackmore’s steaks or the other night I had some seafood which was really good. I’m open to trying new food.

Q. Christmas is just around the corner, if you could have your fantasy Christmas where would you host it?

A. If I had my choice, probably up in a mountain. In a cosy chalet close to the skiing slopes but also a place where I could relax and spend some time with my loved ones.

Q. Is Christmas cooking at your house all about experimentation or do you take a traditional approach?

A. I would say that it is a combination. A turkey is always best when it is roasted but instead of roasting by time, I use a thermometer probe to determine the right doneness as well as cooking it low and slow. I would also brine the turkey overnight. Roast potatoes are always best when cut into sharp angle to get the crispest edges and if they are first cooked in water until they are almost falling apart. This will allow the hard edges to crisp up and the oil to get in any crevices for extra crispiness.

Q. What sight and sounds and scene would you set for the ultimate Christmas setting?

A. Snow falling, wood in the fireplace cracking with a light smoke smell coming of it. Everyone sitting around the Christmas tree enjoying themselves listening to music and happy after a full day on the slopes.

Q. Is there anything you cook at Christmas that harks back to the recipes of your childhood? Are there recipes you want to pass on to your children?

A. More than just specific recipes, it is the fact of being together and sharing some of my family traditions. I love a good ol’ turkey doorstop sandwich either at the end of the night or the next morning.  Leftover Turkey doorstop sandwiches were my father’s contribution to the cooking when I was a kid but they were awesome.

Q. Do you think it’s wise to get the kids involved in Christmas cooking or is that just asking for trouble?

A. Kids should definitely be involved. This is the perfect occasion to pass on those tips and anecdotes that have been in the family for generations. It is time to make new traditions and keep the old ones alive.

Q. Do you have a secret tip for Christmas lunch?

A. A lot of people eat roast potatoes around Christmas lunch so you should base your whole lunch around roast potatoes.

You can cook meat first, green beans, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, all of that stuff, you can cook that two hours before you eat and just heat it all up, but the roast potatoes, they won’t keep. When they are ready is when you eat.

The superstar chef has created a Heston for Coles Christmas and seasonal range.

Q. Do you have a favourite festive dessert?

A. Tough one, I think it would be a cross between a fudgy chocolate cake and actually we always have the hidden orange Christmas pudding.

Q. And while it’s not quite a cooking question, do you have any advice about what the Christmas guest list should look like?

A. Well if you find out you are having 80 people over for Christmas and you are moaning and saying, ‘Oh I can’t believe I am doing it,’ well… don’t invite them over then!  It’s just simple. Why would you do it to yourself?

Q. And finally, any hints on what to do if everyone hates what’s been served up at Christmas?

A. Well… I’ve never had that problem (laughs).
