Elvis Presley turns 80 and Graceland gets ready to party

You celebrated yesterday, but as far as Americans are concerned, Elvis turns 80 today!

You celebrated yesterday, but as far as Americans are concerned, Elvis turns 80 today.

Yes, eighty.

Older than many kings.

He was just 42 years old when he died on August 16, no longer pretty-boy beautiful, which is how most people prefer to remember him (the pictures here show what he might look like, had he lived.)

So much has happened since he left the building.

His once-young bride, Priscilla – just 14 when they met –  is now 69, and turning 70 in May.

Although she had divorced Elvis by the time he died, they stayed close.

Elvis’s only child, Lisa-Marie, who was just nine when her father died, has been married four times (remember when she married Michael Jackson? Even that seems a lifetime ago; she was also married to the actor, Nicholas Cage, although only for a nanosecond.)

Lisa-Marie inherited her father’s estate when she turned 25. It was then thought to be worth $100 million. Now close to 50, she lives in the UK with her fourth husband and their young twins (Elvis was also a twin; his brother died at birth.)

There will be parties all over America to celebrate the big day, including one at his mansion, Graceland, where Priscilla will cut the cake.

There will be free admission to the North Lawn (the ‘North Lawn’ makes the property sound enormous but, compared with monster homes built for people like Beyonce and Jay Z, Gracelands is a bungalow.)

There will also be an auction of Elvis memorabilia, including Elvis’ First Driver’s License, issued on March 24, 1952, which ‘lists his date of birth as 1-8-35, occupation as student, hair color [sic] of brown, eyes as blue and height of 5’11.’

The website makes plain that all artefacts for sale through auction are from ‘third party sources’ –the mansion and ‘all artifacts in the Graceland Archives continue to be owned by Lisa Marie Presley and are not for sale.’

That said, Rolling Stone is reporting that Elvis’s private plane, the Lisa-Marie, will be sold on February 2. It’s no longer capable of flight, but still has the gold faucets.

Tonight, there will be a dance party, and not only for those who can swivel a titanium hip.  Even to the very young, Elvis is still the King.

See some of these rare images of the King in his heyday.

American photographic website, PhotoJoe.Com released a computer-generated image of how it believed Elvis would have looked at 80.

The King, as Elvis was known, will forever be remembered as one of the most influential characters in pop culture. Here he is on stage at his comeback tour in 1968.

Some of the cars used in Elvis’ films were recently featured in a British exhibition, including this red MG from the 1961 film Blue Hawaii.

Angelina Jolie meets Pope Francis

Angelina Jolie has met with none other than the head of the catholic church, Pope Francis, in Rome on a trip to Italy with her children.
angelina jolie meets pope francis

Angelina Jolie has met with none other than the head of the catholic church, Pope Francis, in Rome on a trip to Italy with her children.

Angelina, 39, met with the Pope in a private audience at the Vatican this week after a special screening of her latest filmUnbrokenat the headquarters of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences and Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences.

Ange reportedly kissed the Pope’s ring and received a rosary blessing from him.

Unbroken, which was directed by Angelina and premiered in Sydney last year follows the story of Olympian and WWII prisoner of war Louis Zamperini, who was a devout Christian. Pope Francis was reportedly already well aware of his tale of survival and devotion, which is why he invited the Maleficent star to screen the film in Rome.

In insider described the special Vatican screening of the movie to E! Online: “There were some twenty-five people at the event,” the attendee tells us. “It’s a very, very strong film about the suffering of a prisoner of war, and details the persecution he went through and his reaction of pardon and conversion, all rooted in faith.

“It was very well done, and you could tell she was very strongly committed to the film.”

The meeting came after Ange was seen out shopping in Rome with her brother James Haven and daughters Zahara, 9 and tomboy Shiloh, 8 at a toy shop in Rome.

The star has drawn some criticism for choosing to meet with the Pope after reportedly choosing to depict a more “universal” faith in her film rather than the Christian faith that Louis Zamperini aligns with.

Angelina told reporters last year that: “We made it universal, not specific to one faith, and that was something that was agreed upon with Louie,” (via Religion News).

A source has previously revealed though that both Ange and Brad “admire the Pope” and “like the pope’s message” after he famously spoke about homosexuality in 2013, where he said: “If someone is gay and he searches for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge?”

Her meeting with the Pope is not the first time that the Hollywood star has met with a major leader, last year she met with her majesty the Queen who made her an honorary dame for her humanitarian work.

Angelina and Brad last year attended an anti-rape summit alongside George Clooney’s human-rights barrister wife Amal Clooney and Angelina is known for her work as a special envoy to the United Nations.

Now after meeting with the Pope it seems that Ange is one step closer to sainthood!

Russell Crowe slammed by Jessica Chastain but defended by Meryl Streep

Jessica Chastain has accused Russell Crowe of having “his foot stuck in his mouth” for his comments on ageism while Meryl Streep comes to her fellow Oscar-winners defence.
Meryl Street Jessica Chastain Russell Crowe

Jessica Chastain has been very matter-o-fact in her response to Russell Crowe’s comments basically saying that actresses in Hollywood facing ageism is a myth.

According to Cosmopolitan Chastain, 37, said the Gladiator star appeared to have is “his foot stuck in his mouth” with his remarks about actresses above the age of 40 and the availability of roles for them.

In an exclusive interview with The Weekly this month – where 50-year-old Russell discusses his richly rewarding role in his new film, The Water Diviner, a film he also directed – the Oscar-winner commented that the type of mature actress complaining that all the good roles have dried up is “the woman who at 40, 45, 48, still wants to play the ingénue, and can’t understand why she’s not being cast as the 21-year-old.”

Crowe was rather frank in his resistance of the notion that ageism exisits in his industry.

“Meryl Streep will give you 10,000 examples and arguments as to why that’s bullshit, so will Helen Mirren, or whoever it happens to be. If you are willing to live in your own skin, you can work as an actor. If you are trying to pretend that you’re still the young buck when you’re my age, it just doesn’t work.”

Adding: “The point is, you do have to be prepared to accept that there are stages in life. So I can’t be the Gladiator forever.”

But two-time Oscar-nominee Chastain, 37, found Crowe’s comments literally laughable.

At the 2014 National Board of Review Awards Gala in New York on Tuesday the Zero Dark Thirty actress giggled as she weighed in.

“I think Russell keeps getting his foot stuck in his mouth,” Cosmopolitan magazine quoted Chastain.

“There are some incredible actresses in their 50s and 60s that are not getting opportunities in films, and for someone to say there are plenty of roles for women that age … [that] is not someone who’s going to the movie theatre.”

Chastain has played varied roles – from her ditzy young socialite character in The Help to her hard-core middle-aged CIA agent in Zero Dark Thirty – but has made no secret of the fact that as an actress, she feels a need to conceal her age to land jobs.

“I don’t like revealing how old I am,” The Telegraph quoted Chastain as saying in 2011. “I played a teenager in a movie recently (Jolene) and Brad Pitt’s wife (Tree of Life) in another, so I like to think I can be any age I need to be.”

But according to Vanity Fair, as Crowe predicted, Meryl Streep, who is currently promoting film Into the Woods, is in agreement with her fellow Oscar-winner.

With signature Meryl Streep-esque poise the 65-year-old actress waived off any criticism of Crowe and said she had no problem with his comments.

“The Russell Crowe thing, I’m so glad you asked about [it],” Streep reportedly told one inquisitive journalist at a press conference for her new film, where she plays an old witch.

“I read what he said—all of what he said . . . [his statements] have been misappropriated . . . what he was talking about. He was talking about himself.”

The three-time Academy Award-winner said Crowe had applied the same age standards to his own career and was merely “proving a point”, adding she felt he was generally “talking about himself as most actors do.”

“‘He said, ‘I’m too old. I can’t be the Gladiator anymore. I’m playing parts that are appropriate to my age,” Streep said.

Adding: “I agree with him. It’s good to live within the place that you are.”

According to The Telegraph, upon turning 40 the veteran actress said she was appalled to be offered three separate witch roles but 25 years on she is happy to play one because she felt it was “age appropriate.”

“I felt it was time, and it was not time at 40.” Streep told The Telegraph.

“And also, I just had a political sort of reaction against the concept of old women being demonised and age being this horrifying, scary thing. I just didn’t like that. I didn’t like it when I was a little girl, I don’t like it now.

“But this is a complex film. Every person is at war with themselves, everybody is after something and they’re willing to compromise everything to get it.”

The Notebook is lovingly recreated for epic marriage proposal

Notebook real life proposal

A devoted Italian boyfriend has adorably recreated a scene from the Notebook to pop the question to his beloved.

It might seem hard to think of anything more romantic than The Notebook – the epic movie starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling – except, perhaps, a Notebook-themed proposal!

While on holiday in London together, Angelo Piccini took the opportunity to pop the question to his girlfriend Chiara Grimaldi whose all-time favourite movie is – you guessed it, The Notebook.

With the assistance of some “romance planners” Angelo hired out a lake at London’s Alexandra Palace and took his future wife on a rowboat ride, just as Rachel and Ryan’s characters Noah and Allie do in the movie.

Angelo also had the lake’s surface decorated with hundreds of paper origami swans in place of the birds floating on the water in the movie. He had a few other romantic touches too like a bouquet of flowers, surprise cocktails, and an acoustic guitar strumming by the lake.

The scene from The Notebook that Angelo lovingly recreated

While the unsuspecting Chiara is distracted by all these little touches, her friends and family pop out of hiding holding a series of signs that read: “You are the one. Chiara, will you marry me?”

When he then pulled the engagement ring out of his pocket, Angelo said: “I’ve tried to recreate a dream for you. When we are together, everything is possible. Together everything is doable.”

“I did this because when I met you one year ago, more or less, my life changed. Everything became more beautiful and after so much time, I fell overwhelmingly in love.”

Naww, how romantic! We’re very jealous and wish the couple all the very best for their future life together!
