Dilemma: Mother asked to replace designer bag after child vomits on stranger’s $1460 tote

A mum has been left with a dilemma after her son was sick on a pricey handbag during a long-haul flight.

A mother of a young child has taken to a parenting forum to query a request from a woman who has asked her to replace her designer bag after her son vomited on it during a long-haul flight.

Mumsnet user, incognitoforonenight shared her moral dilemma online explaining extreme turbulence was the cause of her son becoming sick – some if which splashed on the stranger’s $1460 Louis Vuitton tote.

According to the post the owner of the bag reportedly said that while the bag had been wiped down the smell of sick would permeate from the bag forever.

However the mother noted that she could not see and damage – posted pictures to prove it.

“We apologise and she says, ‘No, it’s on my handbag, it’s very expensive and you need to get your insurance to pay for it to be repaired/cleaned,’” wrote incognitoforonenight.

After the flight the woman allegedly sent the family an email saying they were liable to replace it.

According to a report in the Daily Mail the post was viewed more than 20,000 times with the Mumsnet crowd chiming in to give their two cents on the situation.

And the judgments were mixed – some arguing for the woman and her family to save their money while others took the side of the stranger with the tote.

According to a report in The Sun these were some of the responses:

Amandahugandkisses wrote: “So she wiped the vomit off but the bag still smells. I can see her point kind of. I would pay for the bag to be cleaned professionally.”

RestlessTraveller said: “I think you’re liable. It’s no-one’s fault really but at the end of the day your child has ruined her bag.”

Madbengalmum agreed the pricey handbag owner was in the right and said: “Sooo, why does the value matter? Your kid puked on it, so it’s only fair that you sort it out.”

There were calls for the mum to use travel insurance to cover the costs but others said that the only mistake the family had made was giving the woman their email.

We might never know what the mother ended up doing as Mumsnet appears to have removed the thread to the post.

But… would you cough up?
