Earlier this year we were rattled by the news Monopoly game makers Hasbro would be ditching three of our beloved player pieces in favour of brand-spankin’ new ones.

It was left up to the public to vote for the tokens they’d like to see become a reality, as well as those they’d like to see stick around. In total only eight would make the cut.

The original Monopoly line-up, when the game was released in 1935.

There were 64 new options to choose from and more than 4.3 million votes were counted from 100 countries but it was clear who the favourites were.

Voters weren’t short of options.

The T-Rex, Rubber Ducky and Penguin all passed go and will now be included in the next-generation version of Monopoly.

They will join old favourites including (in order of votes):

~ The Scottie dog, which topped the list and has been a part of the game since the ’50s.

~ Top hat, a staple since 1935.

~ Car, the 1930’s roadster is still a firm favourite.

~ Cat, which controversially replaced the iron in 2013.

~ Battleship, just snuck onto the list in the 8th spot.

“The next generation of tokens clearly represents the interests of our fans around the world, and we’re proud to have our iconic game impacted by the people that feel most passionate about playing it,” Jonathan Berkowitz, senior vice president at Hasbro Gaming, said in a statement.

If you’re not ready to let go of your favourites just yet don’t stress as there’s still time – the new pieces won’t be making their way onto shelves until September.
