If you already start your day with a green smoothie, then high-five for doing your health a favour.

But if you're bored with your regular blend (AKA green sludge), then give your smoothie a flavour kick and rev up your metabolism in the process with one of these tasty add-ins.

Not only do they deliver on the flavour front, you can say sayonara to those stubborn kilos, too!

1. Avocado

This powerhouse fruit adds a delicious creamy texture to your smoothie while completely quashing hunger pangs, stabilising blood sugar and helping burn fat.

In fact, research shows that eating just half an avocado can reduce hunger by 40 per cent for hours afterwards.

Serving size: 1/2 large avocado

2. Ginger

Not just for stir-fries! Reap the benefits of this gut-boosting spice by adding a little to your morning mix. Ginger's soothing properties help to promote healthy digestion, rev up your metabolism and fill you up.

Not a fan of the strong flavour? Neutralise it with some fresh citrus fruit.

Serving size: 1-2cm

3. Matcha

This green tea powder is rich in fat-burning antioxidants, which help boost metabolism and stops fat cells from forming.

Indeed, a US study found that those who drank match daily lost twice as much as those who didn't.

Serving size: 1/2 tsp.

4. Quinoa

Swap oats for quinoa this ancient Aztec grain is packed with protein and will keep you full and satisfy your carb cravings in one hit.

Half a cup of cooked quinoa contains nearly hald as many kilojoules as the same quantity of oats, too!

5. Pea protein
