Terry Inglis (Maxine Klibingaitis), 1985

“Terry was Paul’s first wife. He was an engineer student. And Terry was a plumber with a heart of a gold.

She was mixed up with the wrong people – and ended up shooting Paul! He was heartbroken. And that was the beginning of Paul being bitter, twisted and not trusting women.”

Gail Lewis (Fiona Corke), 1987

“I think Gail is still the number-one love of Paul’s life.

That photo was taken after flying from Melbourne to London. We were taken to the Dorchester [Hotel] for a press call.

A wall of photographers were all flashing at once. That’s why we look a bit stunned!”

Christina Alessi (Gayle Blakeney), 1991

“I was buff in those days, wasn’t I? [Laughs]

Paul loved Chrissy, but they weren’t on the same level – he was an empire-builder, while Chrissy was a homebody.

They were able to make it work for a while. But wife-syndrome can only last so long.”

Izzy Hoyland (Natalie Bassingthwaighte), 2003

“That was one hell of a relationship!

It was probably his most exciting relationship. And it was one of the most incredible, fun times when I was working with Natalie. It was an actor’s dream to go to work every morning and be in Neighbours.

Nat is one of those actresses who isn’t afraid at all – she’ll try anything as long as it works. Her professionalism always used to blow me away.

I have the greatest respect for her, and she’s become a lifelong friend.”

Lyn Scully (Janet Andrewartha), 2006

“Lyn – oh, God! That was a whirlwind romance – and it kind of came from nowhere.

It’s like the producers were scratching to find someone to put with Paul. But it worked because they were so incredibly different. That’s why it fell apart as well.

It’s probably one of the few times Paul was really honest with a woman, because they had a very fast marriage in three hours. I think it’s one of the shortest marriages in history!

But Janet is such a joy to work with.

It’s like the producers were scratching to find someone to put with Paul.”

Kirsten Gannon (Nikola Dubois), 2007

“It was more of a relationship of convenience for Paul. She was this hot, young blonde, and he thought, ‘I’ll have a bit of that, thanks!’ And so he did.

He used Kirsten and then it all went horribly wrong. Not only did he use her, he left her for dead. The remarkable thing is she forgave him for what he did to her.

She ended up with horrific burns, and she actually had the goodness to say to Paul that she forgave him.”

Rebecca Napier (Jane Hall), 2009

“That was a funny relationship. She was another mad one, wasn’t she?

Rebecca was genuinely in love with Paul, and Paul was genuinely in love with her. But it was volatile.

She was strong-minded, which is probably why they lasted and went as far as getting married.

If she hadn’t pushed him off the balcony, they might have sorted things out, and it actually could’ve gone on a bit longer. She was a good match for Paul.”

Diana Marshall (Jane Badler), 2010

“This is one of those situations where the chemistry simply didn’t work.

It didn’t click. It was a shame, because she was a great actress and was great to work with.”

Priya Kapoor (Menik Gooneratne), 2012

“That was the second marriage Paul busted up. It was the same thing – Paul having a game.

He was just a playboy, wasn’t he? He tried it on with any woman. And the harder they were [to get], the more he tried – and the more fun there was to gain.

Priya fell for Paul before he fell for her, because it was only a game for him at that stage. But eventually he ended up falling for her, although he did it very quietly.

He was aware it could break up a family. Priya and Paul were a very on-off thing, and it was very secretive.

It was all very, very naughty!”

Paul and Izzy

Naomi Canning (Morgana O’Reilly), 2015

“Who’d have thought Paul Robinson would fall in love with a Canny [a member of the Canning family]?

It started as a working relationship. And Paul was devastated when she left. She was insane, but a great character.

Morgana made the character such fun as well.

Bring her back any day. Pay her a million dollars to make her my partner!

She’s brilliant to work with. She’s fun, experimental and one of the few actors I’ve worked with who wants to play things out and make things work. It’s a shame it didn’t go on.”
