Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’Hara’s cause of death revealed

Catherine O'Hara is remembered as a legend in comedy.

Just weeks after news broke legendary actress Catherine O’Hara passed away, aged 71, her cause of death has been revealed.

According to TMZ — which reportedly obtained the medical report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiners Office — the Schitt’s Creek star died from a pulmonary embolism, otherwise known as a blood clot in the lungs.

However, it did claim that rectal cancer was the underlying cause.

News of O’Hara’s death broke on January 30, with reports claiming that the Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a call to her home in the early hours of the morning and taking the Canadian actress to hospital in a “serious” condition. Hours later, the news was confirmed by her team who described her passing as the result of a “brief illness”.

Shortly after, the tragic news was met with an outpouring of love from fans and co-stars alike.

“I thought we had time,” her Home Alone co-star wrote on Macaulay Culkin wrote on Instagram.

““I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I’ll see you later.”

Eugene Levy, who starred alongside O’Hara in Schitt’s Creek, shared his feelings in a statement to USA TODAY.

“Words seem inadequate to express the loss I feel today,” he said.

“I had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O’Hara for over fifty years.”

“From our beginnings on the Second City stage, to SCTV, to the movies we did with Chris Guest, to our six glorious years on Schitt’s Creek, I cherished our working relationship, but most of all our friendship. And I will miss her. My heart goes out to Bo, Matthew, Luke, and the entire O’Hara family.”

Other celebrities who posted tributes to O’Hara include Dan Levy, Justin Theroux, David Furnish, Pedro Pascal and Justin Theroux.

O’Hara is remembered as a genius in the comedy sphere, with two Emmys and countless iconic titles under her belt. She is survived by her husband, production designer Bob Welch and their two sons, Matthew, 31, and Luke, 29.
