Streaming giant Netflix have today announced the release of their first Australian original series called Tidelands.

The Aussie series will be a supernatural crime/drama which will be available to stream on Netflix around the world!

There is no release date for the new series, but production will begin in Queensland next year.

Tidelands will take place in the small fishing village of Orphelin Bay, where a former criminal has returned home.

Things take a turn for the dramatic when the body of a local fisherman washes up on shore, leading our main character to begin investigating the death.

This leads her to the reveal of the “Tidelanders”, a creature which is half-Siren and half-human.

Executive Producer Tracey Robinson, who is behind Brisbane-based Hoodlum Entertainment, is thrilled to be partnering with Netflix in order to bring this show to life.

“The primeval landscapes of Queensland are a perfect setting to tell the story of betrayal, small town secrets, ancient mythology and, when it comes to family, explore whether blood really is thicker than water,” Tracey says.

Creator Stephen M Irwin, who was also behind the hit Aussie series Secrets & Lies, will also write the first 10-episode season of Tidelands.

This will be the first time that brand new Australian content written specifically for Netflix will stream on the service.

“We’re proud these strong Australian storytellers are bringing their vision to the first Australian Netflix original series,” Erik Barmack, vice president of international original series at Netflix, said.

“We can’t wait to bring the mystery of Tidelands to our members around the world.”

Netflix have successfully created various series under their ‘Netflix Originals’ banner which have raised the bar when it comes to TV.

Some of their original series include Orange Is The New Black, Stranger Things and The Crown. We can’t wait to see this new Australian series alongside these titles!
