Everyone’s favourite TV host Grant Denyer has been doing it tough lately, confined to a hospital bed while he recovers from a horrific back injury.

The usually chipper television host worried fans across the country when he was rushed to hospital in late March over the debilitating injury – with his wife Chezzi Denyer sharing frequent updates on his condition.

Grant has an “annular fissure or ruptured/ torn disc” which he suffered while “hammering in some stakes” in the paddock on the family’s property.

The extensive time in hospital has been tough for the Denyer family, including Grant and Chezzi’s adorable daughters Sailor and Scout, as Grant is currently unable to walk or sit.

While his injuries aren’t life-threatening, they are very serious and Grant has been absent from his many professional gigs as he heals, including Dancing With The Stars and hosting 2Day FM breakfast radio, with Ed Kavalee and Ash London.

“I don’t want him to work anymore, because I’m really worried he’s going to end up in a wheelchair,” Chezzi told Ed and Ash this week.

Plus, the time away from his little girls has been particularly heartbreaking.

“Sailor said the other day, and it broke my heart… I’ll probably cry, but because she’s been having nightmares, she said, ‘I just want Daddy to come home,'” Chezzi said.

Now, Chezzi has given her Instagram followers another update about how her family is travelling.

She posted an adorable selfie of her and Sailor, as they prepared to visit Grant in hospital.

Chezzi wrote that Sailor had chosen her clothes “carefully” for the visit and was so excited she had her bag “packed ready yesterday afternoon.”

But despite the smiling pic, Chezzi said the past week has been incredibly difficult, and she’s tried to keep it together for the sake of her kids.

“Even though I may look vibrant, and happy here with my hair done and makeup on, don’t be fooled. I’ve simply done this for my daughter,” she captioned her photo.

“The past few days I have walked around like a zombie, and when out of sight of my children I have cried and cried and cried.”

Chezzi said she wanted to be honest about her feelings, to show that life isn’t always sunshine and rainbows.

“I don’t want a world of pity, because there are so many doing worse than us,” she wrote.

“We are OK. @grantdenyer is in hospital recovering from an incredibly painful tear in his L1-S5 disc. It’s a common injury. It just happened during a routine job on the farm.”

“We are a close family and we miss him. A lot… But, next week will be a totally different story. Prayers and hugs to anyone suffering from back pain or injury at the moment.”

Grant is currently on a lot of prescription medication to manage his pain, which has concerned some of his fans, given his previous dependence on pain meds.

Last week, Chezzi was asked if the couple were worried about the popular TV host going back on meds while in hospital this time.

She said Grant was in so much pain when he was rushed to hospital that giving him pain medication was the only option.

“He was in such intense, acute pain when we got into hospital and they checked his vitals and said this guy needs to be given a massive dose of morphine, his blood pressure is through the roof,” Chezzi explained.

“I don’t think he was really thinking about it, but we’ve had some really good guidance and we’ve been juggling different types of medication because usually they put you on very strong morphine which is not Grant’s friend.

This isn’t the first time Grant has badly hurt his back. In 2008 he was hospitalised after breaking his back in a massive car accident, which took months of recovery.

It’s during that time that Grant developed a reliance on medication.

Last year, Grant revealed to The Daily Telegraph that the injury led to a huge decline in his mental health, and a dependence on painkillers.

“I mentally wasn’t well, I was on pain medication for long time, and I probably wasn’t aware of the effects of that. I just didn’t have an education to be able to deal with it. I think I was caught in that trap and a whole whirlwind of emotions that meant I was at my lowest,” he said.

In 2017, he was admitted to hospital again following a car crash which saw him suffer from a broken coccyx and finger.

Wishing Grant the speediest of recoveries!
