Cassandra Thorburn has penned an emotional tribute to her late father, who passed away on Thursday night.

The former ABC journalist credited her father’s own 50 years in journalism and his role as a doting grandfather.

“A journalism career spanning over 50 years in TV, newspapers and radio,” she captioned a black and white photo of her father in his younger years split with an image of the two holding hands.

“A role model to many and my biggest supporter. Thank you for being the beloved poppy to my children and my Dad. Max Thorburn 27/4/1946 – 18/10/2018.”

Cass’s father had been battling cancer for three years and speaking to The Daily Mail, she admitted the last six months were “excruciating.”

“My dad taught me to accept life is full of imperfect people, including ourselves and to approach each day as an opportunity to do better. If you hurt someone be man enough to admit it and make amends. True gifts.”

This isn’t the only heartbreak Cass has opened up about this year.

Speaking exclusively to The Weekly, the mother of three spoke about the struggle of her highly publicised split from ex husband, Karl Stefanovic and how she has changed in the two years since it first happened.

“Thankfully I’ve been gifted with enough resilience and strength to have got us all through these past two years,”

“Last year, I declared that Karl really was dead to me, a man I no longer know, but the children still have their father.”

“The flip-side of that is I feel like we’re dead to his family and almost anyone from our old life.”

“There has been practically no contact. I feel like we’ve been discarded and disposed of, replaced by a whole new line-up of starters.”

“It has been a real adjustment period for me.”
