Having a set of fluttery full lash extensions can make you feel like you’re red carpet ready even when you’re sitting in your PJs on the couch.

The I-woke-up-like-this ease of having stunning lashes without a lick of makeup is just part of the allure of getting extensions.

As with any type of, er, enhancement, however, comes the horror stories.

You may have heard tales of irreparable damage to your natural lashes or even nasty side effects, and while they may happen in worst case scenarios, they can also certainly be avoided.

We get the lowdown from founder of Lady Lash Charlotte Creasey on the dos and don’t of lash extensions so you can safely sport a lash so sultry one wink would knock over a Hemsworth brother.

Is damage normal?

Contrary to popular belief and all the terrifying tales you’ve heard, Charlotte says extensions should not damage your natural lashes.

“There shouldn’t be damage if your lashes have been applied correctly with sustainable lashing techniques.”

So what leads to so many people complaining of this negative side effect?

“Often because the lashes haven’t been isolated properly and the technician puts a lash extension on one [natural] lash, but it’s actually also connected to another. Then they grow out at different rates, so one pulls the other one out.”

Translation: find a professional lash technician who knows what they’re doing.

Bigger is not always better

Sorry folks but that age-old saying ‘the bigger the better’ doesn’t apply here.

If you have a certain look in mind or you’re getting addicted (which is easily done) to your fluttery new friends don’t be tempted to opt for more.

“A lot of people will come to the picture of this sort of ideal look and what we can actually do is based on their natural lashes, which basically means that the extensions that we put on would never be more than two or maybe three millimetres longer than your natural lash.”

Going too heavy on the extension can be, quite literally, too heavy for your natural lashes and in turn cause damage.

“The longer and the thicker the lash is, the heavier the weight of the individual lash is.

They will probably look fine but the next day they will start drooping because the natural lash doesn’t have the weight to hold the extension on top.”

Maintenance is key

Once your lashes are on and you’re looking like a Hollywood starlet there are a few key things you can do to keep your lashes healthy and your extension lasting longer.

“The most important thing would be to keep oil off of the eye area.

If you’re using a lot of oil or makeup around the eye area and it kind of builds up, then they’re not going to be clean. It also creates a kind of barrier to the glue and gradually the makeup will get between the lash and the extension and they’ll just start to pop off.”

Charlotte advises you invest in special cleaning products designed for lash extensions and use them two-three times a week.
