This week saw the celebration of World Emoji Day.
That seems crazy, but remember back in 2015 when emoji was the word of the year?
You’re right, that makes it no less crazy and yet this is the world we live in.
To celebrate World Emoji Day, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg bestowed upon us a special treat, research revealing the world’s top 10 most used emojis.
The red love heart didn’t make the top 5, and considering its position as the passive sign off of a generation we’re a little surprised.
Coming in at number one is the ever versatile crying-laughing face emoji – this was closely followed by love-heart eyes and kiss blowing smiley face.
Facebook claims people send over five billion emoji every day on their messenger app, so these are the people to trust when it comes to this kind of insight.
The UK and US both used laughing-crying emojis the most.
The UK went for the more subtle straight on option, and the US chose the slightly more jaunty, angled smiley face. Ah, culture.
Both Mexico and Brazil where the notable users of the love-heart eyes emoji.
And Australia?
Our most used emoji is the blushing smiley face, because we are an adorable nation.
Apple announces 56 exciting new emojis
Apple CEO, Tim Cook announced the release of 56 new emojis in celebration of diversity and World Emoji Day.
The new emojis will be added to iOS, macOS and watchOS platforms later this year and will include options like, options like
“Woman with Headscarf, Bearded Person and Breastfeeding, and food items such as Sandwich and Coconut. More animals and mythical creatures like T-Rex, Zebra, Zombie and Elf are a fun way to describe situations and new Star-Struck and Exploding Head smiley faces make any message more fun.”
