Tributes flow for Queen Margrethe of Denmark as she celebrates her 80th birthday

With a 48-year legacy as the reigning Monarch of Denmark, Queen Margrethe is a true force to be reckoned with.

But more so than anything, it’s her formidable, charismatic nature that stands out above anything else – and just a quick look at the plethora of birthday tributes she’s recieved as she approaches her 80th birthday will tell you as much.

The Danish Queen turned 80 on April 16, a milestone to be celebrated no matter what the circumstance – and royals from across the world certainly made sure they did.

Tributes flowed for the admirable Monarch as the day approached, with some very special video messages sent from her royal affiliates in other European countries.

And in a sweet moment of modesty, Margrethe was thoroughly “surprised” by the whole thing, with the Palace stating that despite “the Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses could not be present to celebrate The Queen in Denmark as otherwise planned, all nevertheless wanted to delight Her Majesty with personal congratulations.”

While some of the Kings and Queens, Dukes and Duchesses, and Prince and Princesses messages were ogle-worthy enough on their own, we’ll safely say the very best message came from Margrethe’s own grandchildren, who shared an adorable video in honour of their grandmother.

The children of Crown Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik joined their cousins for a sweet surprise video, where all eight of them wished her a Happy Birthday.

Sharing the sweet gesture on Instagram, the Palace wrote, “Due to the situation with the spread of the Coronavirus, it is not possible for the Queen to be with her grandchildren on her 80th birthday, as planned. Here is a short sequence from the private greeting from the grandchildren.”

In addition, Kings, Queens, Princes and Princesses from across Europe shared their own videos wishing the Queen a Happy Birthday.

In a compilation clip, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel of Sweden and King Felipe and Queen Letizia of Spain are among those who sent their best wishes to the Monarch.

Royals from around the world joined in wishing the Queen a happy birthday.

The Palace has also released several new stunning portraits of the Queen in honour of the milestone.

In the beautiful images, Margrethe is seen in several different regal locations with various instruments, animals and even her two heirs, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Christian.

Suffice to say the Queen would no doubt be feeling the love on her big day.
