Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia have revealed the darling name of their newborn son, introducing… Prince Gabriel Carl Walther, Duke of Dalarna!

In keeping with royal tradition, Prince Carl’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, announced the all-important moniker at a specially convened cabinet meeting on the morning of September 4.

The baby’s middle name honours his parental grandfather while Walther is the name of Queen Silvia’s late father, the baby’s great-grandfather.

According to Sweden’s royal palace, the little prince is the first person in the history of the ruling house of Bernadotte to bear the name.

Of course, with that in mind, it’s a decision that surprised royal watchers everywhere.

The announcement was followed by a ‘Te Deum’ service of thanksgiving at the royal chapel with the likes of King Carl Gustaf, Queen Silvia, Prince Carl and Crown Princess Victoria turning out for the historic occasion.

Prince Carl, 38, and Princess Sofia, 32, welcomed their second child together just last week, on Thursday, August 31.

The Swedish Royal Court announced the happy news in a statement, revealing that both “mother and child are doing well.”

“On Thursday, 31 August at 11:24 a.m., Princess Sofia welcomed a healthy and prosperous child at Danderyd Hospital,” the statement read. “Both mother and child are doing well.”

Shortly after the birth was announced, the proud dad-of-two mustered up the energy to offer a brief statement to reporters.

“We are really happy,” he said. “It’s a very cute boy.”

“It feels great, pure joy! He seems to be a very charming little boy and Sofia is a wonderful mom. It’s overwhelming,” he continued. “He has a draw of both me and Sofia.”

Carl and his wife — a former model and reality television star — announced in March that they were expanding their family.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia are pictured at the christening of their first born, Prince Alexander.

Prince Alexander will turn two in April.

“We are happy to announce that we are expecting a child, a sibling to Prince Alexander,” they said in a statement alongside a darling family photo. “We are looking forward to welcoming a new little member to our family.”

The beloved duo, who wed in a lavish ceremony in in 2015, are already the proud parents to a son called Prince Alexander, Duke of Södermanland, who will turn two in April.

Congratulations again to the happy family-of-four!
