Queen Elizabeth has been a little perplexed by the current trend for taking selfies, particularly with people doing it constantly in Her Majesty’s presence.

As one of the most photographed people on the planet, she is used to seeing flashes from the paparazzi wherever goes, but the Queen is apparently now disappointed to be greeted by her public with the sight of upheld screens and camera phones whenever she is out and about.

US ambassador Matthew Barzun has commented in an interview with Tatler magazine that her majesty finds it "strange" and "disconcerting" to constantly see the back of iPhones instead of people’s faces wherever she goes.

Matthew, 43, said: "She was essentially saying: 'I miss eye contact'."

The ambassador said that Queen Elizabeth told him this during a “nice chat” that they had when he received his ambassadorial appointment at Buckingham Palace last year.

It’s not that the Queen, at 88 years old, is a total technophobe – she has as an iPhone given to her by her son Prince Andrew, the Duke of York, in 2001, and she also owns an iPod. She and her husband Prince Phillip, are believed to be quite the modern monarchs, with a good grasp on technology. Rather, it seems that she misses the human interaction that the phone-phenomenon has taken away.

When the Queen visited BBC headquarters last year, after they were given a multi-million dollar makeover, it was reported that there was dismay when the Queen was greeted by staff with upraised smartphones and tablets wherever she turned.

In spite of this, she has now been part of countless selfies taken by admiring fans in her presence, including one in particular taken by two Australian hockey players that went viral recently when the Queen unwittingly photobombed their selfie taken at the Commonwealth Games.

She’s not the only one either, plenty of royals have now been subject to the selfie phenomenon, whether intentionally or not. Click through the gallery to see which royals have been snapped!
