Queen Elizabeth has given a personal donation to help in the search and rescue mission in Italy after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit the country last week.

The tragedy left at least 267 people dead and hundreds more injured.

According to Hello Magazine, the royal gave an unspecified amount to the British Red Cross, an organisation of which she is a patron.

The monarch then shared her condolences to the President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, via Twitter.

Queen Elizabeth was saddened by the tragedy.

Her message read: “Prince Philip and I were saddened to hear of the loss of life following the earthquake in central Italy.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Italy, especially the family and friends of those affected.”
