The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have yet again gone against tradition and embraced a more modern monarchy by selecting godparents for their daughter from their close circle of friends as opposed to royal dignitaries.

Kensington Palace shared the names of the fourth-in-line to the throne’s godparents via a statement: “The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have asked the following people to be godparents to Princess Charlotte, all of whom are friends or family of The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge”

They revealed their names to be: “Miss Sophie Carter, Mr. James Meade, Mr. Adam Middleton ,The Hon. Laura Fellowes, Mr. Thomas van Straubenzee.”

Notably, nobody with a royal has been selected as one of the young princesses godparents.

In yet another moving tribute to his mother, Prince William selected Laura Fellowes, his cousin and Princess Diana’s niece to take on the role of godparent for his daughter.

Among the other people bestowed with the honour is the Duchess’ cousin Adam Middleton and Prince William’s closest pals, James Meade and and Thomas van Straubenzee.

Catherine’s long-time friend and trusted member of her inner circle, Sophie Carter, has been confirmed as one of the Princess’ four godparents.

It continued: “Following the service, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will give a tea at Sandringham House. Guests will be served slices of christening cake, which is a tier taken from The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s wedding cake.”

Similarly, in 2013 William and Catherine selected seven people to take on the role as godparents for their first-born son and future King of England, Prince George.

Among them were friends of the couple Oliver Baker and Emilia Jardine-Paterson as well as Earl Grosvenor, Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, Julia Samuel and William van Cutsem.

Zara Phillips, Prince William’s cousin, was the only member of the Royal family to be selected as one of George’s godparents.
