Prince Philip has stepped for the first time since his hip operation last month, attending the Royal Windsor Horse Show.

The Duke of Edinburgh, 96, was spotted behind the wheel of a Land Rover as he drove himself to the annual event held in the private grounds of Windsor Castle. Upon arrival, he pulled up alongside wife Queen Elizabeth for a brief chat through the car window.

Speaking with People Magazine, an onlooker said Philip was clearly “enjoying his freedom.”

“He and the Queen spoke for about five minutes,” the insider continued. “She leaned into the window to talk.”

Her Majesty, who celebrated her 92nd birthday last month, was dressed down for the day out on the green in a gingham skirt, quilted jacket and floral headscarf. She completed the look with rose-tinted sunglasses and a sensible loafer shoe.

Philip, meanwhile, wore a crisp white shirt and navy jacket. He didn’t venture out of the vehicle.

Her Majesty, 92, was also pictured at the annual event.

The outing came as a welcome surprise to onlookers and royal enthusiasts who’ve been waiting patiently to hear news of his recovery.

Philip, 96, underwent hip surgery on Wednesday 4th April, after being admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital in London the previous afternoon. It followed a series of missed engagements and last-minute cancellations.

He was discharged from the hospital in mid-April and at the time, Buckingham Palace released a statement saying he was “progressing satisfactorily at this early stage.”

“His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh left King Edward VII Hospital at midday today, following a hip replacement operation last week. The Duke will continue his recovery at Windsor,” the palace said. “His Royal Highness would like to convey his appreciation for the messages of good wishes he has received.”

Last week, the palace was unable to confirm if the prince would be fit enough to attend Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19. But this latest outing seems to be an encouraging sign that he will, indeed, step out for the important occasion.

Wishing the beloved royal a very speedy recovery!
