As we twiddle our thumbs and wait for the annual royal family Christmas cards, this year’s one from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex is expected to cause a bit of drama in the household.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan are set to release their Christmas card in the coming days, but the content is rumoured to feature one key family member that will break royal tradition.

Last year, Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s Christmas card featured an unseen snap from their royal wedding day. In the photo, the couple, with their backs to the camera, watch the fireworks at their evening reception on the grounds of Frogmore House, their hands locked together.

But this year’s Sussex Christmas card is rumoured to feature a “selection of family photographs,” according to E News.

These will, of course, feature their seven-month-old son Archie Harrison but according to the source, some of the photos may also include Meghan’s mother, Doria Ragland.

“Harry and Meghan are said to want [to] ensure that some of their Christmas card images reflect that Doria is very much part of their family and of Archie’s upbringing,” the source says.

The source added that this inclusion of a non-royal family member is “a break with protocol from traditional royal Christmas cards”, as grandparents don’t tend to feature and used Duchess Catherine’s parents Michael and Carole Middleton as a key example.

Royal Christmas cards tend to focus on the immediate family, but there have been exceptions.

Queen Elizabeth’s Christmas card with Prince Philip in 1987 showed the reigning couple with their grandchildren. At the time, these were a five-year-old Prince William and a two-year-old Prince Harry, along with Princess Anne’s children, a then-six-year-old Zara and 10-year-old Peter Phillips.

Royal protocol or not, we just can’t wait to see what the Sussex family have planned!
