The British royals have again proved they are a modern family with the Queen’s annual Christmas message to be broadcast for the first time in 3D.

The monarch will cap off her Diamond Jubilee year with an address reflecting on the year’s celebrations and the Olympic Games, and viewers with a 3D TV set and special glasses will be able to see it like never before.

The 86-year-old monarch recorded the address at Buckingham Palace on Friday.

The television broadcast is not the first time the Queen has made on-screen history this year. She also made her film debut alongside Daniel Craig.

The past few years of the Queen’s 60-year reign have seen increasing royal uptake of new technology, with a particularly strong online presence this eventful year.

The royal family’s official websites have acted as an online hub of all things royal, and active Twitter accounts kept tech-savvy royal watchers informed throughout Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

An app was launched as well as official souvenir programs to be downloaded as ebooks, expanding the palace’s tech portfolio which also includes a YouTube channel set up in 2007, and their first Twitter account in 2009.

Just last week the palace again made history by announcing the Duchess of Cambridge’s pregnancy via Twitter, though the TV address will not mention the royal baby, expected next year.

The television broadcast will be the Queen’s 55th. Her first Christmas message was broadcast in 1952 via radio, following a tradition begun by her grandfather King George V in 1932.
