She might have been a Hollywood actress, but even Meghan Markle can’t seem to pull off a convincing laugh.

The newly minted Duchess is the talk of the town at the moment after fans spotted a rather telling clip of Markle apparently ‘fake laughing’ during the Royal Variety Performance in November.

In an opening skit by host Greg Davis, the comedian recalled some of the humorous things his mother and her friend had said about the royal family – and unintentionally, it seems everyone but Meghan was in on the joke…

As the show kicked off, Davis’ jokes were met with roars of laughter from the crowd, but poor old Meghan seemed to have her work cut out for her as she looked bemused, confused, and at times, dumbfounded by some of the British comedian’s jokes.

And while Meghan might have convinced some of us with her hard-hitting acting as paralegal Rachel on Suits, she wasn’t quite hitting the mark on this particular night, with fans taking to Twitter to comment on her lacklustre performance.

One person wrote: “Meghan is fake smiling and laughing the whole way through this.”

Meanwhile, another fan said: “All the jokes are going over Meghan’s head like!”

And in a humorous comment, one fan said: “Do you think when Meghan Markle dreamed of being a Princess she ever thought it would involve spending 3 hours watching Rick Astley, Clean Bandit and Mr Gilbert from The Inbetweeners?”

Going by the look on her face, she definitely wasn’t anticipating it!

The Duchess is relatively new to the UK after officially moving from her home in the US, and fans speculated this was the cause of her confusion when it came to the jokes.

“I love how Meghan probably didn’t understand the British humour and Harry just told her to laugh whenever a comic was on stage,” a fan posted on Twitter.

But understanding UK comedians aside, Markle seems to be well and truly enjoying her life as a British royal.

On Monday evening, the pregnant Duchess made a surprise appearance at the British Fashion Awards, where she presented the British Womenswear Designer of the Year award to Claire Waight Keller of Givenchy.

During Meghan’s presentation to the designer, who incidentally designed her wedding gown in May, the 37-year-old gushed: “It is such a pleasure to be here celebrating British fashion and British fashion designers in my new home in the UK.”

The moment also drew a lot of attention due to Markle’s protruding baby bump, which has grown substantially between her public appearances over the past few months.

But it was the way that Meghan couldn’t stop holding her growing tummy that got people talking this time.

Fans and critics alike again took to Twitter to weigh in on the Duchesses favoured new cradling habit.

One fan boldly wrote: “Meghan, we know you are pregnant. You can stop holding onto the bump with both hands now. It won’t fall off.”

While another said: “Meghan Markle needs to desperately stop holding her baby bump because it’s not as if everyone doesn’t already know.”

But some were supportive of the mum-to-be, defending her maternal instict.

“Don’t even waste ur time arguing with ppl attacking Meghan for something as normal and precious as cradling her bump. The fact that they’re even attacking her in the first place tells you they’re a lost cause so 👋🏽,” said one Markle fan.

Another was also defensive of the Duchess: “She just likes holding her bump like that. Or she wants to happily show it off. At least she’s not out there picking other women apart and questioning their every move, so keep on holding your bump.”

Whether you’re a fan or not, there’s no denying Meghan is a major global influencer right now. And as an experienced speaker and fierce advocate for human rights, she’s well equipped it take it on – trolls or no trolls.
